Françoise Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first record Oh Oh Chéri appeared, written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. Her own flip side of the record, "Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles" became a success, riding the wave of Yé-yé music in France, with two million sales.
Hardy sang in French, English, Italian, Spanish, and German. In 1963 she came fifth for Monaco in the Eurovision Song Contest with "L'amour s'en va". In 1963, she was awarded the Grand Prix Du Disque of the Charles Cros Academy.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had had a son, Thomas Dutronc, in 1973. In 1994, she collaborated with the British pop group Blur for their "La Comedie" version of To The End. In May 2000, she made a comeback with the album Clair Obscur. Her son played guitar and her husband sang the duet "Puisque Vous Partez En Voyage." Iggy Pop and Étienne Daho also took part. Hardy lives near Paris and Dutronc lives in Monticello, Corsica, although they remain a couple.[citation needed]
Pas gentille

Disent parlant de moi
Elle n'est pas gentille
Elle n'est pas gentille
Non, pas très gentille
Meme mes amis
Ils diraient Cette fille
Qui n'est pas gentille
Pourrait bien changer
Oui, voilà que depuis peu
Je sors tous les soirs
Et ces gens-là diraient
S'ils découvraient que je rentre si tard
Cette fille pourrait mal tourner
Mais s'ils se doutaient à quel point je t'aime
Ils diraient Cette fille
Qui n'est pas gentille
Pourrait bien changer
Et ils diraient vrai !
Tu peux me changer
(ad lib)
The song "Pas gentille" by Françoise Hardy is a reflection on how people are often quick to judge others based on their appearances and habits without really knowing them. In the first two stanzas, Hardy sings about how people who see her often say that she is not nice, even her friends agree. The repetition of the phrase "Elle n'est pas gentille" emphasizes the judgmental nature of people and how they tend to generalize and label individuals without really knowing their true nature.
However, Hardy then goes on to suggest that people's perceptions of her may change if they knew the real reason behind her behavior. She reveals that since she started going out more frequently, people would be quick to say that she is "mal tourner" (on the wrong track) if they found out that she was returning home late. But if they only knew how much she loved her partner (the "tu" in the final verse) and the positive impact it was having on her life, they might reconsider their harsh judgments of her. In the end, the song is a plea for people to judge others less harshly and to seek to understand their true motivations.
