To the End
Francoise Hardy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All those dirty words
(Jusqu'Ã la fin)
They make us look so dumb
(En plein soleil)
We've been drinking far too much
(Jusqu'Ã la fin)
And neither of us mean what we say
(En plein amour)
Well you and I
Collapsed in love
And it looks like we might have made it
Yes, it looks like we've made it to the end
What happened to us?
Soon it will be gone forever

Infatuated only with ourselves
And neither of us can think straight anymore

Overall Meaning

To the End is a song by Françoise Hardy which perfectly encapsulates the idea of a relationship that is on the verge of collapse. The first verse talks about the use of dirty words that make their relationship look stupid. The alcohol consumption also suggests that they are not themselves and do not mean what they say. They are in love but they are not expressing it in the right way. However, the chorus suggests that despite their problems, they believe they have made it to the end. This could be seen as them reaching the end of their troubles or the end of their relationship.

The second verse tells us that they are infatuated only with themselves and cannot think clearly anymore. They are aware that their love is slipping away from them and, as the title suggests, they are heading "to the end". The repetition of the phrase "en plein amour" reinforces the idea that they are fully consumed by their relationship, but this all-consuming love may be doing more harm than good.

The final chorus is a repetition of the earlier ones, emphasizing that despite the uncertainty and the problems, they have still made it to the end. The use of "en plein soleil" (in full sun) at the end of the chorus could suggest that their relationship is now fully exposed, that they are in the open, with no secrets left. Overall, To the End is a song that captures the difficulties of a relationship that is on the brink of collapse.

Tous ces bals masqués (Si peu d'amour)
Du mauvais cinéma (Et tant de haine)
We've been drinking far too much(Si peu d'amour)
And neither of us mean what we say (Et tant de haine).

La comédie du grand amour
Vous ne me ferez pas l'injure de la jouer, jusqu'au bout
De me la jouer jusqu'au bout.

Pourquoi tant de haine (Si peu d'amour)
C'est un accident de voirie (Et tant de haine)
Infatuated only with ourselves (Si peu d'amour)
And neither of us can think straight anymore (Et tant de haine).

Well, you and I collapsed in love
And it looks like we might have made it
Yes, it looks like we've made it to the end.

I was a teenage girl when this was released. I'm a native French speaker and I could listen to that version 30 times in a row just to hear Damon Albarn's English accent in that tiny part where he sings in French. Sooo sexy. I was completely in love with him.

I know this is a late reply, but I thought you'd like to hear that Damon sang a different French version of the song too. It was recorded before this duet. Here is it- https://youtu.be/4l9wGsTQy0A

France and UK should do these Anglo French collaborations for the Eurovision.Maybe that way , we'd both start winning again.Accordeon included, of course.

Ironically I think it's the only time in Françoise Hardy's career that she ever sang a song with an accordion track
