Summer
Frank Hamilton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Summer where have you been?
It's the first week in september and you've only just walked in
I've been trying to remember how you feel upon my skin,
Oh summer, where've you been?

Summer, settle down.
It's the first time that the rain has left to find another town
I've been waiting by the window hoping you might come around,
oh summer, let's settle down

And I hope it lasts forever
And I hope you stick around
You can change your mind
But you'll never change the weather
In this town

Summer, glad you're here
Haven't seen your face enough it's been a long and tiring year
And I've been swimming through the months hoping my ship would reappear,
Oh summer, so glad you're here

And I hope it lasts forever
And I hope you stick around
You can change your mind
But you'll never change the weather
In this town

Lover, welcome back
When you left I was surrounded by the things that I lack
Were trying to move on by putting papers over cracks
Oh lover but now your back.
Oh summer, now you'e back
Oh summer - so glad you're back

And I hope it lasts forever
And I hope you stick around
You can change your mind
But you'll never change the weather
In this town

And I hope we're still together
When we're 6 feet under ground
And you can change your mind

But you'll never change the weather in this town
Nothing last forever in this town

Overall Meaning

The song "Summer" by Frank Hamilton opens up with the singer questioning where summer has been, as it is already the first week of September when it finally makes its appearance. The singer misses the feeling of summer on his skin and remembers it fondly. He then implores summer to settle down in this town and not leave too soon. The singer sings about his hope that summer would stay forever, even though it's inevitable that it will eventually come to an end. The lyrics give us a sense of longing for warm days and beautiful evenings, as well as the disappointment when they come to a close.

The second verse sees the singer expressing his happiness that summer is finally here, as the past year has been long and exhausting. He has been waiting for months for summer to arrive and finally thinks that maybe his ship has come in. As summer returns, he hopes it will stick around and that its warmth will never leave. The third verse brings in a new character, a lover that has come back and helped fill the void that was there when summer wasn't around. The final chorus is a reminder that nothing will last forever, even though we hope it will.
