Hublots
Frank Ocean Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Turn the mountain view, find a place for a quite one
Suburbia got a yard
All this at stake for when I'm on the run
(Run)

I know you're in there somewhere
Can't wait some, something you
Someone out there
Trying to love the one you're with tonight
Try to love the one you're with
(?) sometimes
You don't have to be all by yourself
In the morning light
This'll all be over with
I know you're in there somewhere

Can't outrun something you need
It's been so long

Overall Meaning

In the lyrics of "Hublots," Frank Ocean seems to be reflecting on his life as a successful musician and the constant pressure to keep up appearances for his fans and the media. He talks about how he longs for a place where he can be alone and escape from the noise and chaos of his world. The line "turn the mountain view, find a place for a quiet one" suggests that he is searching for a peaceful retreat in the mountains where he can reflect on his life and be at peace with himself.

He also talks about the sacrifices he has had to make to maintain his success, including putting relationships and friendships on the line. The line "All this at stake for when I'm on the run" suggests that he is aware of the high stakes of his success and the potential consequences that he may face if he were to fail or slip up. The chorus of the song includes the line "trying to love the one you're with tonight, try to love the one you're with," which could be interpreted as a message to himself that he should focus on being present in the moment and appreciating the people around him, rather than constantly looking for something better.

Overall, "Hublots" is a deeply introspective and reflective song that speaks to the pressures of fame and success, and the struggle to find peace and contentment in a constantly changing and chaotic world.

The song isn’t about longing for another person, but it is about loneliness or feeling as if you’re alone. The idea is that when you are feeling down and without some other person or thing to comfort you, you will always have yourself, should you choose to accept yourself. Trying to “love the one you’re with” is learning to love yourself in your solitude, instead of needing anything else to complete you in that moment. This is reflected in having “all that estate for your mind to run;” it’s so easy to lose your confidence when you’re left only with your own thoughts in the dead of night. Similarly to how Childish Gambino’s “3005” can be mistaken for a love song, this duet with Jazmine is really a call to acknowledging you’re never alone if you truly have yourself, the one you’ll always be with.
