Bein Green
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not that easy bein' green
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves
When I think it could be nicer bein' red or yellow or gold
Or something much more colorful like that

It's not easy bein' green
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
Not standin' out like flashy sparkles on the water
Or stars in the sky

But green is the color of Spring
And green can be cool and friendly-like
And green can be big like an ocean
Or important like a mountain
Or tall like a tree

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why
But why wonder, why wonder?
I am green and it'll do fine
It's beautiful
And I think it's what I want to be

And green can be big like an ocean
Or important like a mountain
Or tall like a tree

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why
But why wonder, why wonder?
I am green and it'll do fine

It's beautiful
And I think it's what I want to be

Overall Meaning

Frank Sinatra's song "Bein' Green" is a poignant ballad that explores the feelings of someone who is different, and who feels like they don't quite fit in. In the opening lines, the songwriter reflects on the challenges of feeling different and not blending in with the crowd. The color green is used as a metaphor for standing out and not quite fitting in. The songwriter's voice is wistful and uncertain, as if they are struggling to come to terms with their own difference.

The lyrics go on to explore the many different ways in which green can be beautiful and powerful. The songwriter notes that green is the color of spring, and that it can be friendly and cool, as well as important and imposing. Despite the many positive attributes of green, it is clear that the songwriter is still struggling to find their place in the world. The repetition of the line, "When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why," drives home the sense of uncertainty that is at the heart of the song.

But despite these feelings of uncertainty and doubt, the songwriter ultimately comes to embrace their difference. The final lines of the song are both triumphant and uplifting, as the songwriter celebrates the unique beauty of being green. The repetition of the phrase, "I am green and it'll do fine," speaks to the idea that it is possible to find happiness and fulfillment even when you feel like you don't quite fit in.

Overall, "Bein' Green" is a powerful and moving song that explores themes of difference and self-acceptance. The use of green as a metaphor is both simple and effective, and the song's melody and instrumentation are beautifully understated.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
