Forget to Remember
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pretend there is no silence, alone in your apartment
Don't notice things that once were hers
Ignore the endless hours
Don't chase the dream that your hearts were after, children's laughter

Somehow believe in living, forget about the giving
Just tell your life it must go on
Run from yourself until you can't be found
But don't remember, refuse to remember

Forget to remember love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Frank Sinatra's song "Forget to Remember" touch on the theme of loss and how individuals cope with it. Specifically, the song focuses on a man who is trying to move past a failed relationship. He is advised to pretend there is no silence in his apartment and to ignore the things that remind him of his ex-partner. The man is also encouraged to forget about the dreams they once shared and to disregard the time they spent together. These instructions provide a blueprint for the man to move forward without dwelling on the past.

However, the lyrics also highlight the negative consequences of this approach. The man is told to "run from himself until he can't be found," which suggests that he is using avoidance as a coping mechanism. The song warns against this, as it ultimately results in the man forgetting about love altogether. In other words, by trying to forget his past, the man risks losing the ability to love again in the future.

Overall, the lyrics to "Forget to Remember" offer a poignant reflection on the complex emotions that come with the end of a relationship. While the song acknowledges the need to move on, it cautions against doing so at the expense of one's emotional well-being.

Frank reportedly said that this song was supposed to be included in the 1969 "My Way" album, but he left it out afraid it would be a hit and would be forced to perform it night after night, stating he just didn't have the wherewithal emotionally to do that. A very, very personal song.
