I'll Be Home For Christmas
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree

Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

Won't you please have snow and mistletoe
And presents under the tree for me, for me

Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams

I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

Overall Meaning

Frank Sinatra's "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is a classic yuletide song that touches a chord deep within the hearts of anyone who has ever been away from their loved ones at Christmas time. The song is sung from the point of view of a soldier who is far away from home and reflects on the things he misses and longs for at this time of year: snow, mistletoe, and presents under the tree. Although he would give anything to be home for Christmas, he knows that this is unlikely: "Christmas Eve will find me where the love light gleams…if only in my dreams." The melancholy tune is a reminder of the sacrifices that millions of soldiers have made throughout the years, and it has become a poignant tribute to all those who have served their country.

The lyrics, which were written by Kim Gannon and Walter Kent, capture a sense of yearning that is universal, especially during the holiday season when people tend to be separated from their loved ones. The song was first recorded by Bing Crosby in 1943, and quickly became a hit with American troops serving overseas during World War II. It was so popular, in fact, that the US War Department banned it from being played on the radio out of concern that it would lower morale among the troops. Nevertheless, the song continued to be played and remains a holiday classic to this day.

Anyone else remember the lyrics being, “I’ll be home for Christmas, you can count on me” instead of, “I’ll be home for Christmas, you can plan on me”

The song was written in 1943 to honor the soldiers who longed to be home for Christmas. It's quite sad to think about the military being home for Christmas "only in their dreams".

@reic0002

It is, but then being a member of the armed forces is hardly 9 to 5!
