I See Your Face Before Me
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see your face before me, crowding my every dream
There is your face before me; you are my only theme
It doesn't matter where you are; I can see how fair you are
I close my eyes, and there you are always

If you could share the magic, yes, if you could see me, too
There would be nothing tragic in all my dreams of you
Would that my love could haunt you so
Knowing I want you so
I can't erase your beautiful face before me

Would that my love could haunt you so

Knowing I want you so
I can't erase your beautiful face before me

Overall Meaning

The song "I See Your Face Before Me" by Frank Sinatra is a classic romantic ballad that expresses the feelings of a person who is deeply in love with someone. The lyrics convey the idea of the love interest being constantly present in the singer's thoughts and dreams, even if they are physically apart. The opening line, "I see your face before me, crowding my every dream," sets the tone for the rest of the song as the singer describes how the love interest is always on their mind. The description of seeing their face "before me" illustrates how vivid and powerful the memory of the person is.

As the song continues, the singer states that the love interest is their "only theme," indicating that they are consumed by thoughts of the person. This is further emphasized in the next line when the singer says, "It doesn't matter where you are; I can see how fair you are." This line suggests that the love interest's physical location is irrelevant because their beauty remains constant in the singer's mind's eye. The lyrics express the singer's desire to share their love with the person if only they could see them, mentioning that "there would be nothing tragic in all my dreams of you" if they could.

The final lines of the song, "Would that my love could haunt you so, knowing I want you so, I can't erase your beautiful face before me," highlight the singer's pain at not being able to express their love fully to the person. They long for their love to be reciprocated (for their love to "haunt" the person) but fear that it may not be possible. The final phrase, "I can't erase your beautiful face before me," once again illustrates the power and permanence of the love interest's memory in the singer's mind.

sinatra's singing and the arrangement get to the sentiment behind the fairly weak words. A triumph of inner reading--which was his greatest gift

@SaidSheThatsWhat

I wouldn't call these lyrics weak. Compared to the best, they're pathetic, but compared to the worst, they're masterly, so I'd call them fairly good for a '50s crooner song. And you grant that there is sentiment present within them. Come on.

@NelsonMontana1234

Agree. They're throwaway lyrics. And Sinatra and Riddle make it art.

@@SaidSheThatsWhat These lyrics are actually from no later than 1941 - when PAL JOEY opened on Broadway.
