I Will Drink The Wine
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Someone said "drink the water"
But I will drink the wine
Someone said, take a poor man
Rich don't have a dime
Go fool yourselves if you will
I just haven't got the time
Yes you can drink the water (I will drink the water)
But I will drink the wine

Someone gave me some small flowers (ooh)
I held them in my hand (ooh)
I looked at them for several hours (ooh)
I didn't understand

Go fool yourselves if you will (ooh)
You can hold out your hand
I'll give back your flowers (give you back your flowers)
And I will take the land
And I will drink the wine

Sometimes I'm very very lonely
There's only me to care
And when I'm very very lonely
I want someone to share
I'm going to drink the wine
I'm gonna take my time
And believe in a world that is mine

Someone gave me flowers (ooh-ooh)
Held them in my hand (ooh)
Looked at them for many hours (ooh)
Didn't understand

Go on and fool yourselves if you will (ooh)
You can hold out your hand
I'll give back your flowers (give you back your flowers)
And I will take the land
And I will drink the wine

And I will take the land
I will drink the wine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Frank Sinatra's song "I Will Drink the Wine" seem to be about the singer's rejection of conventional wisdom and society's expectations. The opening lines, "Someone said, drink the water, but I will drink the wine. Someone said, take a poor man, rich don't have a dime," suggest that the singer is making a deliberate choice to go against the norm. They are not interested in following the crowd or doing what others tell them, they want to do things their own way.

The chorus, "If you can drink the water, I will drink the wine," reinforces this theme of individualism. It implies that while others might be content with the basics, the singer wants something more extravagant and indulgent for themselves. This is reinforced later in the song, when they sing "I'm going to drink the wine, I'm gonna take my time, and believe in a world that is mine." Here they are saying that they are going to enjoy themselves and live their life on their own terms, without worrying about what others think.

The middle verse, "Someone gave me some small flowers, I held them in my hand. I looked at them for several hours, I didn't understand," seems to be a metaphor for the singer's struggle to understand the world around them. They are trying to make sense of their experiences but are struggling to do so. However, they remain resolute in their belief that they will figure things out and do things their own way. The final lines, "I'll give back your flowers, and I will take the land. And I will drink the wine, and I will take the land," suggest that the singer is ready to take control of their life and make their mark on the world.

Overall, "I Will Drink the Wine" is a song about independence and freedom, about breaking away from convention and doing things your own way. It's a message that resonates with many people and helps explain why the song has endured over the years.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
