Love's Been Good to Me
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have been a rover
I have walked alone
Hiked a hundred highways
Never found a home
Still in all I'm happy
The reason is, you see
Once in a while along the way
Love's been good to me

There was a girl in Denver
Before the summer storm
Oh, her eyes were tender
Oh, her arms were warm
And she could smile away the thunder
Kiss away the rain
Even though she's gone away
You won't hear me complain

I have been a rover
I have walked alone
Hiked a hundred highways
Never found a home
Still in all I'm happy
The reason is, you see
Once in a while along the way
Love's been good to me

There was a girl in Portland
Before the winter chill
We used to go a-courtin'
Along October hill
And she could laugh away the dark clouds
Cry away the snow
It seems like only yesterday
As down the road I go

I've been a rover
I have walked alone
Hiked a hundred highways
Never found a home
Still in all I'm happy
The reason is, you see

Once in a while along the way
Love's been good to me

Overall Meaning

The song "Love's Been Good To Me" by Frank Sinatra talks about the life of a man who has been a wanderer his entire life, never having found a place he could call home. He has walked alone, hiked countless highways, yet he is happy because love comes to him once in a while. Despite being a drifter, he has been fortunate enough to experience love with two women, one in Denver and the other in Portland.

The man describes his first love in Denver, where he met her before the summer storm. Her tender eyes and warm arms could ease even the roughest of storms, and he was smitten by her. Although she is gone, the memory of her love can still make him smile, and he has no regrets about it. The second love was found in Portland, where the winter chill would have made life unbearable if not for her. She had a contagious laugh that could chase away dark clouds and cry away the snow. Although it feels like yesterday, he has to move forward down the road.

"Love's Been Good To Me" is a song about love's enduring power to create a sense of home and belonging even when life has not provided one. The man is content with his wanderings because he has found moments of meaning and happiness along the way. He knows that love may not always be there, but as long it comes once in a while, he is grateful for what it has brought to his life.

Well. Well. Well,
...another song, another memory,. ... another Smile. And how I love how Frank sings. It's as if he's been there in his Songs,. ....of which really, he has.!!

Her name (not was) but rather IS, Joyce.
And she had an appt w God, (of which we all do) And she's w The Best of The Best.
...and on this Mothers Day, I smile in Gratitude. Why.?!!?
...because, I Have been a Rover,
Hitched a 100 Hiways, never found a Home. But for almost 10 years, I was blessed in having Joyce, so beautiful, so elegant, so God Loving.

And now I say,
" And Loves been good to Me."

Thank You Bunny, Thank You Frank.

Sean.

I hadn't heard this song since I was 6 years old. It started playing after choosing it by accident on here and the memories immediately flooded in. As I said I was only 6 years old in 1969 but my dad must have played the song incessantly back then for me to recall it as I did.. With the harpsichord it is a beautiful song kinda sad yet very beautiful.
