People Will Say We're in Love
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why do they think up stories that link my name with yours?
Why do the neighbors chatter all day, behind their doors?
I know a way to prove what they say is quite untrue.
Here is the gist, a practical list of "donts" for you.

Don't throw bouquets at me
Don't please my folks too much
Don't laugh at my jokes too much
People will say we're in love!

Don't sigh and gaze at me
Your sighs are so like mine
Your eyes mustn't glow like mine
People will say we're in love!

Don't start collecting things
Give me my rose and my glove.
Sweetheart they're suspecting things
People will say we're in love.

Don't praise my charm too much
Don't look so vain with me
Don't stand in the rain with me
People will say we're in love!

Don't take my arm too much
Don't keep your hand in mine
Your hand feels so grand in mine
People will say we're in love!

Don't dance all night with me
Till the stars fade from above.

They'll see it's alright with me
People will say we're in love.

Overall Meaning

In the song "People Will Say We're in Love," Frank Sinatra questions why people are linking his name with his lover's and why their neighbors are talking behind closed doors. The first verse implies that their relationship is being scrutinized by others, possibly due to societal norms or prejudices. The second verse reveals that Sinatra knows that their actions and behaviors may be interpreted as signs of love, leading to further speculation and gossip. Therefore, Sinatra presents a "practical list of 'don'ts'" as a solution to their worries. He advises his lover not to show excessive affection or admiration towards him, to avoid looking into each other's eyes, to refrain from dancing or spending too much time together, and to not act in any way that could be seen as romantic towards him. Sinatra's list reveals his desire to maintain a level of privacy in their relationship and to avoid any unnecessary attention.

Justin Nasfell

wish i could have been alive back then. life moves so much faster now it seems, and we’ve slowly drifted further and further from what we stand for as people and as a country.

It's amazing what can be achieved with just a vocal accompaniment, a beautiful arrangement and of course the talents of "The (original) Voice".

Molly O'Gorman

Much as I love Frank, I can't help but feel that this song loses something as a solo, let alone with the comedy taken out of it. Vocally flawless as usual, however.

Holly Winn

Frank Sinatra never gets old. Love it.

Wasn't nearly long enough, beautiful version!

Recorded during the musician's strike of the early forties with a vocal choral as accompaniment. Despite its limitations the arrangement seems to work quite well and appears very natural. Some may deride Frank's songs from this time period as part of his black and white era but there is much to recommend this material, i.e. Frank's early mastery of the modulation of pitch, pace and power, his great vocal range and his intrinsic ability to convey the story of the song by means of the bel canto musical style he employed even at this early stage in his career. For me this tune is as fresh and alive as the day it was recorded.

Which musician was that?

Alejandro Candelario

I actually only prefer his stuff from the 1940s when his voice was softer.
