Something's Gotta Give
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When an irresistible force such as you
Meets an old immovable object like me
You can bet just as sure as you live

Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
When an irrepressible smile such as yours
Warms an old implacable heart such as mine
Don't say no because I insist

Somewhere, somehow
Someone's gotta be kissed

So, en garde, who knows what the fates might have in store
From their vast mysterious sky
I'll try hard ignorin' those lips that I adore
But how long can anyone try?

Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight it with all of our might
Chances are some heavenly star-spangled night
We'll find out just as sure as we live

Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

Fight, fight, fight it with all of your might
Chances are that some heavenly star-spangled night
We'll find out just as sure as we live

Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

Something's gotta give

Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give

Aw, let's tear it up

Overall Meaning

In the song "Something's Gotta Give" by Frank Sinatra, the lyrics discuss the tension and energy between two people who seem to be opposites. The first verse starts with an analogy between two opposing forces, an irresistible force, and an immovable object. It is quite clear that the singer (Frank Sinatra) is the old, immovable object and the other person is the irresistible force. The quote "You can bet just as sure as you live, something's gotta give" emphasizes that there is a need for change because neither can coexist together harmoniously without adapting to each other.

In the second verse, Sinatra again uses imagery to describe the effect of the other person's presence and smile on his "implacable heart." He pleads for a kiss and says it's necessary for their relationship to progress. The phrase "en garde" which means "on guard" in French suggests a sense of caution or hesitancy that the singer has. The sense of something that is about to happen is also confirmed with the line, "who knows what the fates might have in store."

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Something's gotta give" several times to highlight the fact that change is inevitable. The final verse ends on an optimistic note where the singer talks about fighting and chances. This line - "Chances are some heavenly star-spangled night we'll find out just as sure as we live" - reveals that the singer is hopeful that something good will happen between him and the other person.

Overall, "Something's Gotta Give" is a classic song that speaks to the tension and attraction between two people who are opposites. It's a beautiful and timeless portrayal of the human experience and the feeling of wanting something so bad that you're willing to take a chance and fight for it.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
