Swinging On A Star
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Writer(s): burke/van heusen

Would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a mule
A mule is an animal with long funny ears
He kicks up at anything he hears
His back is brawny - and his brain is weak
He's just plain stupid with a - stubborn streak

And by the way, if you hate to go to school
You may grow up to be a mule

Would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a pig

A pig is an animal with dirt on his face
His shoes are a terrible disgrace
He ain't got no manners when he eats his food
He's fat and lazy - and extremely rude

But if you don't care a feather or a fig
You may grow up to be a pig

Would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a fish

A fish won't do anything but swim in a brook
He can't write his name or read a book
And to fool the people is his only thought
Though he slippery - he still gets caught
But then if that sort of life is what you wish
You may grow up to be a fish

And all the monkeys aren't in a zoo
Every day you meet quite a few
So you see it's all up to you

You can be better than you are
You could be swinging on a star

Overall Meaning

Frank Sinatra’s song “Swinging on a Star” is a piece about choices and their consequences. The opening stanza presents and contrasts two choices: to swing on a star, metaphorically speaking, and carry moonbeams home in a jar or to be a mule. The phrase “swing on a star” serves as a metaphor for achieving one’s dreams and aspiring to become something great. On the other hand, the mule, the other choice presented in the song, is associated with negative connotations, such as being stupid, stubborn, and dull-witted. The song also notes that if you hate going to school, you might wind up becoming a mule.

The second verse chooses pig as the alternate choice, and it describes its physical characteristics, including a nasty disposition, bad hygiene, and a lack of manners. However, the song acknowledges that if you don’t care how you come across to other people, you might grow up into a pig. Finally, the third stanza presents the fish as an alternative to swinging on a star, and the song notes that they do nothing but swim in a brook and can’t read or write. Additionally, they are dishonest as illustrated by the phrase, “to fool the people is his only thought, though he’s slippery, he still gets caught.” In conclusion, the song reveals how our choices can either facilitate or hinder our dreams, dreams that are possible if we aspire to do better.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
