That's How It Goes
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That's how it goes
When you feel so sad you feel so low
Life seems so bad I know, I know
That's how it goes

That's how it goes
You may think it's funny
but it always shows,
Try to hide it honey, oh no, it shows.
That's how it goes

Some people say,
Everything's gonna be okay,
Just give it a while,
You'll find you're back
Back in style

But I don't know life will get better
I am sure they know,
Sooner or later it shows, I know
That's how it goes

It's funny to see how easy life can be
Just sit back and smile
You'll find that life is worthwhile
That's how it goes
When you're on top the whole world knows

Wouldn't want to stop it, oh no, it shows
That's how it goes

Overall Meaning

Frank Sinatra's song, "That's How It Goes" is a classic tune that illustrates the ups and downs of life. The lyrics explain how sometimes life can seem like a difficult and unhappy journey, but at the same time, it can also be a simple path towards happiness. Throughout the song, Sinatra emphasizes that it's easy to fall into sadness, but it's also simple to find happiness and make life worthwhile.

The first verse discusses how we all have moments in life where we feel sad and low. Whether it’s due to a breakup, a loss or a setback, everyone experiences moments where life seems unbearable. The chorus emphasizes that everyone has these moments, and they are just a part of life. The second verse, on the other hand, explains how some people try to hide their pain, but it always shows. Everyone may try to play off their sadness or pretend they are okay, but eventually, it becomes evident that something is wrong.

The song's bridge provides a glimmer of hope, stating that some people say everything will be okay, and things will get better with time. Nonetheless, the final verse contradicts this notion, indicating that life may never get better. Ultimately, sooner or later, everyone's pain becomes evident and shows how life goes on, and we must navigate it, both the good and the bad.

Overall, the message of "That's How It Goes" is to learn how to handle the bad with the good and continue on life's journey. It teaches us to accept that life has ups and downs, but with a positive attitude, we can make it worth living.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
