When The Wind Was Green
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the wind was green at the start of the spring
When the wind was green like a living thing
It was on my lips and its kiss was fair
You were there

When the wind was red like a summer wine
When the wind was red like your lips on mine
It caressed my face and it tossed my hair
You were there

Then came the fall and all of love
came tumbling, stumbling down
Like leaves that lost to frost and found
They were flying, crying
In a brown wind dying

But the winter's come and we both should know
That the wind is white like the swirling snow

And we'll never see all the wonderful things to be seen
When the wind is green

Overall Meaning

The song "When the Wind Was Green" by Frank Sinatra is a beautiful depiction of the cyclical nature of life and how our experiences are tied to the changing seasons. The opening lyrics speak of the arrival of spring and the freshness of the green wind. The wind here is personified as a living thing and the kiss of the wind is described as fair. The singer says that he was there, placing himself in the midst of the joy that the arrival of spring brings. The green wind is symbolic of life, growth, and new beginnings.

The second stanza transitions to summertime, where the wind is now red, reminiscent of the color of wine. The wind is hot, and it caresses the singer's face and tosses his hair, much like how love and passion can enrapture us. Once again, the singer declares that his lover was there. However, the tone changes as the third stanza begins, with the coming of fall. All of a sudden, the leaves start to fall, much like how love can tumble and stumble down. The imagery of leaves crying and flying in a brown wind has an almost melancholic and desolate quality. It signifies the falling apart of a relationship, much like the falling of leaves.

The final stanza brings us to winter, the season of snow and silence. The wind is now white and swirling, almost like it's obliterated all trace of the previous seasons. The singer alludes to the harshness of winter, indicating that they both should know what's to come. The snow and the blizzard represent the difficulties and hardships that two lovers may have to face in life. The song ends on a wistful note, stating that there are so many wonderful things to be seen when the wind is green, hinting that it's important to cherish the moments of happiness one experiences.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
