You Are There
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel the autumn breeze
It steals cross my pillow
As soft as a will-o' the-wisp
And in its song there is sadness because
There's no you

The lonely autumn trees
How softly they're sighing
'cause summer is dying
they know that in my heart there's no gladness because
There's no you

The park that we walked in
The garden we talked in
How lonesome they seem in the fall
stormy clouds hover and falling leaves cover
Our favorite nook in the wall

In spring we'll meet again
We'll kiss and recapture
That summertime rapture we knew
And from that day never more will I say
There's no you

In spring we'll meet again
We'll kiss and recapture
That summertime rapture we knew

And from that day never more will I say
There's no you

Overall Meaning

In Frank Sinatra's song "There's No You" the opening line "I feel the autumn breeze, it steals cross my pillow" immediately sets the tone for the melancholic song. The autumn breeze is a metaphor for the absence of someone he deeply cared for. The chorus repeats the line "There's no you" which reinforces the idea that everything feels empty and sad without that person around. The song is about the end of a summer romance and the realization that without that person, everything is just not as bright.

The song goes on to mention how even the autumn trees seem to be sighing for the end of summer, just as the singer's heart is also aching for the end of their relationship. The park and garden where they used to walk and talk now feel lonesome and empty. The seasonal imagery throughout the song ties back to the idea that there are different times for different emotions, and that the change in seasons is reflective of the change in the singer's feelings.

You are there, in autumn gold or summer green,
You are there, to lend enchantment to the scene.
I hear music, and all because you are there.
In a mist, behind a window in the dawn,
We have kissed, but when I reached for you, you'd gone...
You come and you go, like April snow,
Until I wonder, darling, are you real, or an illusion I embrace
Half a dream, the other half that laughing face
Although, in my heart, I know that you are there
You are there, You are there!

I've loved this song since I first heard it in his film "The Naked Runner" when I was a young teenager. Powerful. The movie actually was good. A departure from his less serious movies. A total shocker ender. Espionage / spy. Thoroughly enjoyed the film and the song still moves me all these many, many years later.
Catch the movie when you can.

Martini OnTheRocks I finally saw the movie and was waiting for the song to play but I only heard the version without his voice. Did I miss something?

Written for the 1967 film "The Naked Runner," which wasn't among Sinatra's best movies. But a beautiful song and great vocal.
