White Christmas
Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin/Sam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and kiddies listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write

May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song, "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know," sets the tone for the nostalgia that the singer is experiencing. The song is about the joys of Christmas, but also about longing for a time when he was younger, and things were simpler. The second line, "Where the treetops glisten and kiddies listen," provides the image of a picturesque Christmas scene, with snow covering the trees and children eagerly listening for the sound of sleigh bells in the snow.

The chorus repeats the opening lines, emphasizing the dreamlike quality of the song. The idea of a "white Christmas" has become a cultural phenomenon, representing a perfect Christmas full of snow, family, and happiness. The song expresses not just the desire for a perfect Christmas but also the cultural significance attached to it.

The last lines reemphasize the sentimentality of the song, wishing good cheer and snow to all listeners. Ultimately, the song is about the desire to return to simpler times, where happiness came easily, and the magic of Christmas was in full swing.

I'm a 62 year old 2nd generation Italian American who grew up with this music. Frank and Dean were absolute heroes to my parents. We play both these Christmas albums in my house every year along with Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas album.

А я 61летний Одессит с Украины но тоже с детства обожаю их творчество и ещё бы к ним прибавил Тони Беннетта.Все в мире приходит и уходит.А эта музыка будет вечной.

Yes, Beautiful with old Christmas songs!❤🌲 But today they don't even use on TV old cartoons for kids like, Charlie Brown, Flingston's Christmas, Yogie's Christmas and so on...which is sad!😞

I like both of them as they bring back the memories 40 to 60 years ago. They are great artists for me.
