I've Got My Eyes on You
Frank Sinatra & Tommy Dorsey And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got my eyes on you,
So best beware where you roam.
I've got my eyes on you,
So don't stray too far from home.
Incidentally
I've set my spies on you,
I'm checking all you do
From a to zee.
So, darling, just be wise,

Keep your eyes on me.

For me, there's always a highly temporary air about this period in the history of the Dorsey band. There's the obvious reason of Allan De Witt, who, sandwiched between the lengthy and celebrated stays of Jack Leonard and Frank Sinatra, lasted exactly two recording sessions. It's more than that, though. The orchestra had abandoned the Dixie-flavored style of its beginnings and was in a brief stylistic limbo before the recent addition of Sy Oliver would entirely make over the aggregation, turning it into a powerhouse. Between '40 and '42, there was no more versatile band than Tommy's. On the date of this recording, 12/29/39, all this was yet to come, however. Allan, without having that trademark Dorsey sound of either Jack or Frank, sang well, as we hear, but the standout addition on this side, for me, is Buddy Rich.
