The Lady Is A Tramp
Frank Sinatra Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She likes the theater and never comes late
She never bothers with people she'd hate
That's why the lady is a tramp
Doesn't like crap games with barons and earls
Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
That's why the lady is a tramp
Life without care
She's broke--and it's "oke"
Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
That's why the lady is a tramp
She gets too hungry to wait for dinner at eight
She loves the theater but never comes late
She'd never bother with people she'd hate
That's why the lady is a tramp
She'll have no crap games with sharpies and frauds
And she won't go to Harlem in Lincolns or Fords
And she won't dish the dirt with the rest of the broads
That's why the lady is a tramp
She loves the free, fresh wind in her hair
Life without care
She's broke--but it's "oke"
Hates California, it's so cold and so damp
That's why the lady
That's why the lady
That's why the lady is a tramp
"The Lady is a Tramp" is an affectionate tribute to a woman who loves the simple things in life and won't conform to society's expectations. The opening line, "She gets too hungry for dinner at eight," suggests that she doesn't enjoy waiting for the usual dinner time, and likes to eat earlier. The lady in the song is an independent spirit who enjoys the theater, but doesn't care about arriving late. She doesn't waste time with people she doesn't like, and is comfortable in her own skin. Her individuality is further emphasized in the second verse: she's not interested in playing "crap games" with wealthy people, and won't dress up in fancy clothes to go to Harlem. She won't gossip like other women, and is content to enjoy the "free, fresh wind" blowing through her hair. Despite being broke, she's happy and doesn't need wealth or material possessions to feel fulfilled. The final line explains that she dislikes California, perhaps suggesting that she's more of an East Coast person.

Ella was and still is the Queen of Jazz. The quality of sound, the pearls given to the mere mortals is a joy to behold that will last a lifetime. Glorious.

“Ella Fitzgerald is the only performer with whom I’ve ever worked who made me nervous. Because I try to work up to what she does. You know, try to pull myself up to that height, because I believe she is the greatest popular singer in the world, barring none—male or female.” —Frank Sinatra
