Singin' The Blues
Frank Trumbauer and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I never felt more like singin' the blues
'Cause I never thought that I'd ever lose
Your love dear, why'd you do me this way
Well, I never felt more like cryin' all night
'Cause everythin's wrong, and nothin' ain't right
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

The moon and stars no longer shine
The dream is gone I thought was mine
There's nothin' left for me to do
But cry over you (cry over you)
Well, I never felt more like runnin' away
But why should I go 'cause I couldn't stay
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

Well, I never felt more like singin' the blues
'Cause I never thought that I'd ever lose
Your love dear, why'd you do me this way
Well, I never felt more like cryin' all night
'Cause everythin's wrong, and nothin' ain't right
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

Oh, the moon and stars no longer shine
The dream is gone I thought was mine
There's nothin' left for me to do
But cry over you (cry over you)
Well, I never felt more like runnin' away

But why should I go 'cause I couldn't stay
Without you, you got me singin' the blues

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Singin' The Blues" express feelings of heartbreak and despair after losing a loved one. The singer's pain is palpable in lines such as "I never felt more like cryin' all night" and "There's nothin' left for me to do but cry over you." He can't believe that he's lost the person he loves and can't help but ask, "why'd you do me this way?" The imagery of the moon and stars no longer shining and the dream being gone emphasizes the sense of loss and hopelessness that the singer is experiencing.

Despite feeling like he wants to run away from his problems, the singer recognizes that he can't escape his pain because it's tied to the person he's lost. He's left with nothing but the blues, which he can't help but sing. The song's repetition of the chorus reinforces the singer's feeling of being stuck in this cycle of sadness and longing.

Overall, "Singin' The Blues" is a classic example of a blues song that captures the raw emotion of heartbreak and loss. It's a timeless theme that many people can relate to and a testament to why the blues genre has endured for so long.

My name is Tyler Trumbauer. Frankie was my great grandfather. This makes me happy! Thank you!

Nick Dellow

Very pleased and thanks for your comment. Do you have any original photos of your great grandfather?

KC Weapon

Nick Dellow A lot of music/photos/items that belonged to Frankie are now kept here in Kansas City at the UMKC school of music. My family has been sending them almost everything we have so they can preserve it forever. I believe it’s all public...or will be at some point.

Nick Dellow

@KC Weapon Thanks - very glad that everything is being preserved for future generations. I do recall seeing some early photos of Frank at the UMKC website, and also Bennie Moten and Count Basie, etc.

Your great Grandfather will always have a place in jazz. May he rest in peace. I was always sadden about how sad he was when Bixie died...

Eddie Lang--A.K.A. Salvatore Massaro--what a force on that Gibson guitar (I believe by 1927 he had left the L-4 in favor of the L-5). Practically carries the whole rhythm section by himself--and what style. Tragic that the music world lost him when he was only 30.

Glen

And Lang's improvised fills are great countermelodies.

My father was heavily into Dixieland when he was in college, and he considered this record to be the best recording ever made

I would more and more be tending to agree with your father.
