Evelyn A Modified Dog
Frank Zappa Lyrics

Evelyn, a modified dog
Viewed the quivering fringe of a special doily
Draped across the piano, with some surprise

In the darkened room
Where the chairs dismayed
And the horrible curtains
Muffled the rain
She could hardly believe her eyes
A curious breeze
A garlic breath
Which sounded like a snore
Somewhere near the Steinway (or even from within)
Had caused the doily fringe to waft & tremble in the gloom

Evelyn, a dog, having undergone
Further modification
Pondered the significance of short-person behavior
In pedal-depressed panchromatic resonance
And other highly ambient domains...

I loved the 70's. I still remember hearing this "song" as I walked the vinyl stacks in Tower Records at midnight. Zappa was surreal and hilarious. His music is transformative. He could conjure Zeitgeist. He was magical.

To my brother Brian, I have not forgotten ye, God bless Judy and George, you gave me shelter.

One of my favorites!

Panchromatic resonance and other ambient domains are how you tune a piano, or an organ, to get the most from that particular instrument. This is difficult to capture, digitally.

JOHN BAXTER Any discussion of panchromatic resonance must include the people in the piano, from Lumpy Gravy, and Civilization Phase III. It is achieved by putting a sandbag on the sustain pedal, then talking into the open piano, so that the strings resonate from the speech frequencies.

My take on panchromatic resonance....
Pan means across...
Chromatic refers to notes which are adjacent to each other. So if you're going across a piano hitting adjacent notes you're doing like Jerry Lee Lewis dragging his thumb down the keyboard creating a cascading sound for lack of better words. Or. You're doing as children do on a piano, making ungodly noise.
Evelyn is pondering the significance (watching with her head tilted and ears up) of short person behavior (a child), through pedal depressed panchromatic resonacce (there is a kid making a hell of a noise on the piano) and other highly ambient domains (maybe yelling or singing)...

One of my all time faves. Short but poignant.
I was fortunate to have seen Frank live 3 times. I was devastated when he died, far too young. The world lost a genius.
