It was Tiger Wilson versus Kid McCoy
The fight was between Tiger Wilson and Kid McCoy.

In the summer of 'ninety-three
The fight happened in the summer of 1893.

Now the Kid was everybody's pride and joy
Kid McCoy was a very popular and beloved fighter.

Just as game as a kid could be
Kid McCoy was brave and determined, just like a kid.

And his darlin' Bess was in the second row
Kid McCoy's girlfriend Bess was sitting in the second row.

Bess was praying very hard for Kid McCoy to win.

Bess and Kid McCoy wanted to win the fight so they could buy a bungalow together.

Bess was urging Kid McCoy to win the fight, no matter what.

The crowd was cheering Kid McCoy on.

The crowd was encouraging Kid McCoy to use his boxing skills to defeat Tiger Wilson.

But how were they to know it was the Kid's last fight
No one could have predicted that this would be Kid McCoy's final fight.

Now the Kid had fever to the very bone
Kid McCoy was very sick with a fever.

Despite his illness, no one could tell how sick Kid McCoy really was.

Kid McCoy's determination and love for Bess were driving him to fight, despite his illness.

Kid McCoy's love for Bess was his main motivation for winning the fight.

Kid McCoy was getting hit hard by Tiger Wilson and knocked down.

But the count never got to ten
Despite being knocked down, Kid McCoy was able to get up before the referee counted to ten.

Though his brain was reelin' when the people roared
Kid McCoy was feeling dizzy and disoriented from the blows, but he could hear the crowd cheering him on.

He was up on his feet again
Kid McCoy was able to stand up and keep fighting.

Said the Tiger, scowlin', don't you know you're through
Tiger Wilson thought he had Kid McCoy beaten and told him so.

I can whip you just like a child
Tiger Wilson was boasting that he could beat Kid McCoy easily.

I'm gonna take the fight and take your woman too
Tiger Wilson threatened to not only defeat Kid McCoy, but also steal Bess from him.

When he heard that the Kid went wild
Kid McCoy was furious when he heard Tiger Wilson's threat.

Said the Kid, 'For that I'll tear you limb from limb'
Kid McCoy vowed to destroy Tiger Wilson for threatening Bess.

And he sprang like an angry colt
Kid McCoy attacked Tiger Wilson with the fury of a wild animal.

He said a punch a-flyin' at the Tiger's chin
Kid McCoy hit Tiger Wilson with a powerful punch.

Knocked him out like a thunderbolt
Kid McCoy's punch was so strong that it knocked Tiger Wilson out cold.

To the crowd that saw it there was little doubt
Everyone who saw the fight knew that Kid McCoy was the clear winner.

That the Kid was a champ that night
Kid McCoy proved himself to be a true champion in that fight.

But the champ would never have another bout
Unfortunately, Kid McCoy would never fight again due to his illness.

'Twas the fever that won the fight
Kid McCoy's illness ultimately caused him to win the fight, but at a great cost.

Someone is calling out to the crowd to make a bet.
