I Can't Begin To Tell You
Frankie Avalon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't begin to tell you
How much you mean to me.
My world would end
If ever we were through.

I can't begin to tell you
How happy I would be
If I could speak my mind
Like others do.

I make such pretty speeches
Whenever we're apart.
But when you're near
The words I choose
Refuse to leave my heart.

So take the sweetest phrases
The world has ever known
And make believe
I've said them all to you.

I make such pretty speeches
Whenever we're apart.
But when you're near
The words I choose
Refuse to leave my heart.

So take the sweetest phrases
The world has ever known.

And make believe
I've said them all to you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Frankie Avalon's song I Can't Begin to Tell You express the love and admiration that the singer has towards someone special. He starts the lyrics by acknowledging how much the person means to him and how his world would crumble if they ever separated. He goes on to express how happy he would be if he could express his thoughts and feelings as freely as other people can. However, even though he tries to make eloquent speeches whenever they are apart, he finds it hard to articulate what he feels when the person is near him.

The singer then asks the person to take the sweetest phrases the world has ever known and pretend he had said them all to them. This line suggests that the singer is willing to do anything to make the person happy, even if it means pretending to say things he can't find the words to express.
