In 1976, Avalon released a new disco version of "Venus". This helped revive the singer's career, as his success had been waning prior to its release. I was born in 1959. I just recently had to get a job to get money to go along with my SS check, and I ended up at McDonalds. They have music that plays and this is one of those songs. I finally remembered to look it up when I got home just so I could see the video. I love(d) Frankie Avalon and this song, and remember watching all the old beach movies, with him and Annette. The pop music scene was steadily getting better and the seeds planted by 1954, just before Rock 'n' Roll burst upon the people with Bill Haley & His Comets on July 9, 1955 hitting #1 with the powerful "Rock Around the Clock" started that new, explosive, exciting era. And people consistently denigrate the 1950s as some sort of backwater era. Yes, there was the ugly deliberate segregationist LAWS in a few States (people could leave for other greener pastures), but there were many other northern States and Cities that were just as bad in their housing, employment and treatment to the blacks and other minorities. But that still did not stop the increase in prosperity for everyone compared to the Depression 1930s, and war-torn 1940s! The massive government deregulations on private businesses, corporations, and individuals, plus large tax-rate cuts in post-war 1946 (by the then-Republican smaller-government mentality) ushered in Peace and Prosperity for everyone over the next 18 years, along with the lack of constant overseas wars or wasteful military offensive weapon-spending for the special interest war armament manufacturers desires (thanks to Kennedy's tight grip on their war-hawk craziness--ex, Operation Northwoods in Mar. 1962) helped increase the peoples' overall wealth and happiness in that glorious, peaceful era.

One of the best love songs as I was growing up. I waited decades until I finally saw Frankie Avalon in person at The Sandler Center in Virginia Beach. Though I was in the balcony (I had won 2 tickets on the radio) , my friend and I didn't get to meet him. However, I got to meet his son, who plays the drums in his Dad's band. He hugged me and gave me a kiss. I let Frankie's son know that i met his aunt, his Dad's sister (Theresa Avallone) at an airport in early 2002. It was right after my sister passed and I was traveling to go to her memorial service. I was in Philadelphia airport, sitting in one of those rocking chairs, pondering what I would say for her eulogy. A woman looked at me and started to approach me, engaging me in conversation. I told her about my sister's long illness and recent death. She was so nice and started to share personal things. Suddenly she said, "I normally don't tell this to people, but my brother is a famous person." She said he was a singer. She then told me her brother's name: Frankie Avalon! I explained how I had a huge crush on him as a child. I spoke about his songs that I loved, including this one. I requested that she ask Frankie to come to Virginia Beach and perform. He actually did just that a few years later! I would like to see him again and actually meet him the next time! As I walked to catch my flight, I couldn't help but think my sister's spirit had a hand in this fateful meeting. It certainly elevated my otherwise sad mood.

Frankie Avalon, had a fantastic voice; at times, reminiscent of the wonderful Frank Sinatra. Yes, "Venus" is a top highlight in his career. I was a tiny fellow back in the 50's when I first heard it and it was the rage on Top of the Pops. Frankie was blessed with those dark good looks derivative from his Italian background, coupled with a mop of thick hair, and the girls went wild, tearing their hair out. His voice was also used for the opening of films like Voyage to the bottom of the sea and Come Fly with me. His fame continued to grow in the 60's with a spate of those sweet beach movies he made with the even cuter, Annette Funicello. Even in the early 90's, Annette and Frankie parodied their beach stuff in a movie "Back to the beach". Frankie will always have a place in the Hollywood Sun!

I have this weird obsession with the past. (Minus the bad things of course) In spite of the bad things, they really seemed to have great respect for themselves. I guess I had a previous life in the US from the early 1920s until the late 1960s. Then I was born again in the early 1970s. That's why I'm so connected with those splendid songs, singers, and the overall mood from the 1950s and the 1960s. But I'm also connected with the more modern and crazy mood of the 1970s (especially with the Disco Era), the pop of the 1980s, and the Euro Dance of the 1990s. Having two lives in the 20th century makes me completely connected to that century. I hope God put an end to the robotization of human life that has accelerated since entering the 21st century. And may the world recover a little of the childhood and well-being of the 1950s, with men and women returning to love each other and start families.
