By the time he was 12 (1952), Avalon began making appearances on U.S. television for his trumpet prowess, and as a teenager, played with Bobby Rydell in a band known as Rocco and the Saints. In 1959, his songs "Venus" and "Why?" both went to number one on Billboard magazine's Hot 100. Indeed, "Why" was the last #1 hit of the 1950s.

During the 1960s, Avalon became known for his roles in the Beach Party film genre. Later, he became the U.S. national television spokesperson for Sonic Drive-In.

This song has been in my head for decades only knowing parts of it, and not knowing the song title or who sang it. I've just rediscovered it, I'm 65 and mum would sing it to me as a small child.
Although frail I've just sat her in front of my computer and played it to her.
She remembered it and said "I use to sing this to you Peter" and she continued singing it word for word.
Talk about being chocked up, we were both a bit emotional. She'll be 90 on 16th Dec in five days time.
I feel she'll make her birthday and will then sadly let go as she asked me if I'll play this at her funeral sadly.
I promised her I will do that.

I had the opportunity to work with Frankie for three days on an episode of Happy Days about 1981, He was very delightful. He still looked like he did in the 1950s. One day Annette Funicello and James Darren visited the set. I was playing the part of Abe Lincoln in a bit where he is doing a stage show and the record player gets stuck. Long story but great memories.

I used to listen to Frankie Avalon religiously on my box record player in my room at home. Strange I remember it so clear as it seems rather unimportant to remember. It was just cute as I was just a teenager I guess around 14 yrs. Also watched American Bandstand and was so envious that those kids lived in Philly and could go to the show. I saw Frankie Avalon in Atlantic City about 15 yrs ago on New Year's Eve. I think it was at Caesars. Myself & some friends were on the 2nd or 3rd floor walking around looking for a place to eat & we passed by a small restaurant that was open to the hallway & there he sat eating dinner w/ someone else. I walked inside but didn't have the guts to say hi & didn't want to bother him eating. He kind of noticed we spotted him but then we left, he looked exactly the way he did in the beach movies.

@Featureman would love to hear more! My Mother got me hooked on Frankie and Annette years ago. My Mom graduated high school in 1959 and she passed away 10 years ago. Watching these videos and the Frankie and Annette movies make me think of her. Breaks my heart that Annette is suffering with MS, nobody should have to suffer like that.

I'm only 20 years old and I'm just going to put it right out there. If I was 20 years old in the 50s or the 60s, when Frankie Avalon was younger, he would make my heart melt. I would want to marry him. He's so gorgeous.
