Georgia On My Mind
Frankie Laine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Georgia oh Georgia
The whole day through
Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind
Georgia's on my mind
Georgia, Georgia
A song of you
Comes as sweet and clear as moonlight
Through the pines

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile so tenderly
But in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you
Georgia oh Georgia
No peace can I find
For an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile so tenderly
But in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you
Only you
Georgia oh sweet Georgia

No peace can I find
For an old sweet song keeps lovely Georgia on my mind

Overall Meaning

Frankie Laine's song "Georgia On My Mind" is a classic ode to the state of Georgia. The song is essentially about someone who cannot get Georgia out of their mind no matter how hard they try. The lyrics suggest that despite the many distractions and temptations of life, the singer's thoughts always drift back to Georgia. The song is a beautiful and poignant reflection of the human experience, capturing the deep yearning that people can feel for a place they call home.

The opening lines, "Georgia oh Georgia / The whole day through / Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind," set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer conveys the idea that the state of Georgia is so deeply ingrained in his or her psyche that it feels like a melody that they can't shake. The feeling is so intense that no matter how much they try to forget about Georgia, it's always on their mind.

The later lyrics in the song, "Other arms reach out to me / Other eyes smile so tenderly / But in peaceful dreams I see / The road leads back to you," suggest that although the singer is distracted by the many other temptations and distractions in life, their heart always brings them back to Georgia. The message is one of deep love and longing for a place they call home, even if they are far away.

@highnrising

Great Stuff! I think Frankie Laine did the best versions of "Georgia", "Sunny Side" and, of course "Lucky Old Sun." Ray Charles obviously spent a lot of time listening to him!
