Jealousy
Frankie Laine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jealousy, night and day you torture me
I sometimes wonder
If this spell that I'm under
Can only be a melody
For I know no one but me has won your heart, but
When the music starts, my peace departs

From the moment they play that lovely strain
And we surrender to all its charm again
This jealousy that tortures me is ecstasy, mystery, pain

We dance to a tango of love
Your heart beats with mine as we sway
Your eyes give the answer I'm dreaming of
That soft word your cruel lips will never say

I fear that the music will end
And shatter the spell it may lend
To make me believe when your eyes just deceive
But it's only the tango you love

I fear that the music will end
And shatter the spell it may lend
To make me believe when your eyes just deceive
And it's only the tango you love

It's only the tango that you love!

Overall Meaning

In the song Jealousy by Frankie Laine, the singer explores the emotions of jealousy. He describes how jealousy tortures him both day and night, and how he wonders whether this feeling is caused by a mere melody or something deeper. The singer understands that he is the only one who has won the heart of the person he is singing about, however, every time the music starts playing, his peace departs, and he is left feeling tortured. The melody, that sweet sound that enchants them both, seems to bring them closer in their love, but at the same time, it deepens the feelings of jealousy within the singer. He expresses that the jealousy he feels evokes a mixture of emotions, including ecstasy, mystery, and pain.

The song takes a turn when the singer begins to describe how he and the person he loves dance to a tango of love. Their hearts beat as one, and their eyes make the perfect connection while they sway. The singer needs to hear a soft word from the person he loves, which she never gives him, but he still feels the connection is strong. However, the singer also fears that the music will end, and that the spell they share will shatter. He knows that the person he loves does not reciprocate his feelings and that the tango is all she loves. In this song, the singer expresses how jealousy can be both beautiful and painful at the same time, and how it can take control of a person's mind and heart in equal measure.

This is obviously a newer recording of the original but it preserves the brilliance of the original and displays what a powerful and commanding voice Frankie kept throughout his life. Exceptional.

@Mikado8848

They used to sing, "Jealousy...oh my god youve got leprosy..." What a retort.

@Probably_Ben

while going through some 78s that my grandpa got at an auction, i found this. I would play it on the phonograph that he had from the thirties, now i listen to it on my record player because it’s a fantastic song with so many tempo changes which makes it more impressive. 10/10
