The Ruby and the Pearl
Frankie Laine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a warm red ecstasy to love
That makes you tremble with it's fire
And there's a pure white majesty to love
When you have both you have your hearts desire

Can love be as warm as the ruby
Can love be as pure as the pearl
Just look in the heart of my love for you
You'll find the ruby and the pearl

My love will endure as the diamond
And shine with the shimmer of gold
It glows as a bright star above for you
A thing of beauty to behold

Come close and cling to my kiss
Stay close and share the passion that there is
Yes love is as warm as the ruby
And love is as pure as the pearl
Just look in the heart of my love for you

You'll find the ruby and the pearl
The ruby and the pearl

Overall Meaning

In Frankie Laine's song The Ruby and the Pearl, the lyrics speak to the various aspects of love that make it both warm and passionate, as well as pure and majestic. The warm and passionate aspect is described as a "red ecstasy," which causes one to tremble with its fire. The pure and majestic aspect is described as "white majesty," and when both of these aspects of love are present, one has found their hearts' desire. The question posed is whether love can truly be as warm as a ruby, or as pure as a pearl, and the answer lies within the heart of the singer's love for their partner.

The singer then goes on to describe the enduring qualities of their love, comparing it to a diamond that shines like shimmering gold. They describe their love as a thing of beauty to behold, that glows like a bright star above the listener. The final invitation is to come close and share the passion that exists between them, for love is truly as warm as a ruby and as pure as a pearl, and both can be found in the heart of the singer's love for the listener.

This song speaks to the idea of both passion and romance, and how both aspects of love are necessary for true happiness. The metaphor of the ruby and the pearl emphasizes the value and rarity of both qualities, and underscores the idea that when both exist in a relationship, it is truly something special.

This song began as the theme tune to b-movie "Thunder in the East" (1952), which the Music Director, HUGO FRIEDHOFER, composed. Jay Livingstone and Ray Evans then took it up and turned it lazily into a 3 1/2 stanza song in English, Its incompleteness is demonstrated by Frankie Laine adsding an opening stanza which, sadly, no one else has adopted.
