Already in his youth, Frans Bauer wanted to become a singer after he was inspired by Julio Iglesias, Elvis Presley and Koos Alberts (a Dutch singer). Bauer's own singing career started in 1987 when he recorded his first single, "Ben Je Jong" (Are You Young), under supervision of Dutch producers Rudi Schreijenberg and Emile Hartkamp.
In January 1992 he met his later wife-to-be, Mariska van Rossenberg. He was a local celebrity before rising to national fame due to the national television show "All You Need Is love" in early 1992, where he was to choose two female fans for a date. In 1994 he had his first national hit with "Als Sterren Aan De Hemel Staan". In 1997 he conquered Germany with his album "Weil Ich Dich Liebe".
Frans Bauer's fame kept growing to the point where he had his own reality show called "De Bauers", in which his daily life, including his family life, was followed. Bauer has also designed clothing for the Vroom & Dreesmann retail chain, based in The Netherlands.
He has won several awards and honours in The Netherlands, including a knighthood ("Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau") due to his charitable work and the "Gouden Televizier-Ring" for the reality show that has been running on Dutch television the year previously.
In 2006 he was struck by an infection on his vocal cords. He recovered after surgery.

Ga niet huilen want ik heb je lief
Dit is geen afscheid maar een nieuw begin
Laat geen tranen want dat heeft geen zin
Laat me nog 'n beetje vrij
Laat me nog 'n beetje vrij
Dat is beter voor ons allebei
Weet dat ik jou niets verwijd
‘k Vraag alleen maar om een beetje tijd
Laat me nog 'n beetje vrij
Dat is beter voor ons allebei
Weet dat ik jou niets verwijd
‘k Vraag alleen maar om een beetje tijd
‘k Vraag alleen maar om een beetje tijd
Frans Bauer's song "Laat me nog 'n beetje vrij" (which translates to "Just Let Me Be Free For a Little While") addresses the complexities of love and the essential need for personal space within a relationship. The opening lines frame the narrative as a heartfelt letter, where the singer reassures their loved one of their deep affection. The initial tone is one of comfort in light of potential emotional turmoil, stating that this isn't an end but rather a new beginning. The reminder to avoid tears highlights the futility of sadness, suggesting that the intention behind the singer's request is rooted in a desire for a healthier relationship dynamic.
The chorus introduces the central plea: a request for freedom. This yearning for independence is presented not as a denial of love but as a necessity for both parties involved. In this way, the singer reflects on the idea that maintaining individuality is essential for sustaining a healthy partnership. The insistence that space will ultimately benefit both is a mature recognition of how relationships can sometimes become stifling if boundaries aren't respected. The repetition of the request for ‘a little time’ emphasizes the urgency of this need while also framing it as a temporary measure rather than a permanent withdrawal.
As the song progresses, the lyrics delve deeper into the singer's reflections about their future together. Despite not being married yet, there is a clear intention to grow old together, highlighting a long-term commitment that transcends current circumstances. There’s a sense of spontaneity and youthfulness in the acknowledgment of still having friends and enjoying the freedom of being young. This contrasts with the desire for a mature relationship, suggesting that personal growth, exploration, and the fulfillment of individual needs are crucial elements that should coexist alongside romantic love.
Ultimately, the song conveys a poignant message about the balance between love and autonomy. It suggests that true love can flourish with the right balance of closeness and freedom. The repetition of the request for space serves to reinforce the idea that both partners deserve to nurture their identities even while being committed to one another. Bauer's lyrics encapsulate the notion that love evolves, and sometimes the best way to show love is to allow the other person the freedom to grow, thus nurturing a healthier, more robust relationship in the long run.
