Duijts began his singing career as an André Hazes imitator. But because of the success of the song Je denkt maar dat je alles mag van mij (You think that everything you do is allright with me), a cover of an André Hazes song from 1986 (written by Pierre Kartner), Duijts decided to increase his focus on his own singing career. Meanwhile Duijts already had six hits in the Single Top 100. His album Zo ben ik mezelf (This way I can be myself) was a great success, and remained in the Album Top 100 for the maximum allowed chart-time of two years. Besides singing, he also works in the family business, a demolition company in Tiel.
In 2009 Duijts received the prize for the Nederpop hit with the most plays in pubs and restaurants in that year for his single Je denkt maar dat je alles mag van mij.[2]

We bouwden menig luchtkasteel
In de salon, waar alles begon
Hij speelde accordeon
Heel alleen voor ons twee
Hij speelde accordeon
En we draaiden maar mee
Hij speelde accordeon
Heel alleen voor ons twee
De muziek en de wijn
Een geweldig festijn
En we draaiden maar mee
Ons klein hotel, dat is voorbij
Het ligt er nu zo eenzaam bij
Alsof het nog mee treurt om jou
Omdat ik nog steeds van je hou
Ik kwam er nog eens, maar alleen
De heimwee die dreef mij daarheen
En de baas bleef heel discreet
Vroeg niet naar jou want hij begreep
In de salon waar alles begon
Hij speelde accordeon
Heel alleen voor ons twee
Hij speelde accordeon
En we draaiden maar mee
Hij speelde accordeon
Heel alleen voor ons twee
De muziek en de wijn
Een geweldig festijn
En we draaiden maar mee
The song "Hij Speelde Accordeon" by Frans Duijts tells the story of a couple who spend a romantic weekend at a quaint hotel tucked away in the dunes by the sea. The lyrics describe their carefree and blissful time together, with the days passing by too quickly, and the simple pleasures of breakfast in bed and dancing to the accordion music in the hotel's salon. The song's nostalgic tone suggests that this memory holds a special place in the singer's heart, as he reflects on the happiness they shared in that idyllic moment in time.
The accordion, played by a lone musician in the salon, serves as a central motif in the song. The melody of the accordion represents the romance, joy, and carefree spirit of the couple's weekend escape. The lyrics emphasize the intimate nature of the music, as the musician plays "just for us two," underscoring the personal and intimate nature of the experience. The refrain repeats the line "we danced along" (in Dutch, "we draaiden maar mee"), further driving home the idea that the music served as a unifying force in their relationship, allowing them to connect and celebrate their love.
Overall, "Hij Speelde Accordeon" is a nostalgic love song that celebrates the simple pleasures of life and the memories that live on in our hearts. The song's tender melody and intimate lyrics invite the listener to share in the singer's reminiscence and feel a connection to their own treasured moments and memories.
