What I Got
Franti Michael & Spearhead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One, two, three four
Yoo hoo hoo, ah
Another morning has come and the sun is high
But I know that today is the day that I might cry
Because I know you're going
And I know you're leaving
To somewhere you hope to find the peace of mind you're seeking
In the back of a greyhound bus, it'll take you far
In the back of a greyhound bus you can be who you are

So I say
La-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la La
I got love for you
I got love for you

So I'll be waiting my dear
Waiting right here
I'll be waiting my dear
Waiting right here
I'll be waiting my dear
Waiting right here
For you, you

I remember the time back when we was home
In and out up and down in this life what a crazy road
It's been a long time that I shoulda said what I tell you now
That I got faith in you
And I believe in you
So I say

In the dark of the night in the hotel when you're alone
In the middle of the city where nobody cares to know
On the top of the town in the glimmer of the shining lights
You just shine on now
You just shine on now

And we say
La-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la la
I got love for you
I got love for you

And we say
La-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la la
I got love for you
I got love for you

So come on, come on, won't you come on
Come on, come on, won't you come on
Come on, come on, won't you come on home
So come on, come on, won't you come on
Come on, come on, won't you come on
Come on, come on, won't you come on home, come on home
I'll be waiting my dear
Waiting right here
I'll be waiting my dear
Waiting right here
I'll be waiting my dear
Waiting right here
Waiting my dear
Waiting right here

In the back of a greyhound bus, it'll take you far
In the back of a greyhound bus you can be who you are

So I say
La-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la-la-la la La
I got love for you
Love for you
And I say
La-la-la la-la-la La-la-la La-la-la La La
I got love for you
Love for you

And I say come on, come on, won't you come on
Come on, come on, won't you come on
Come on, come on, won't you come on
Come on, come on, won't you come on home
Won't you come on home (waiting right here)
Won't you come on home (waiting right here)

won't you come on home (waiting right here)
Waiting right here

Overall Meaning

The song "What I Got" by Franti Michael & Spearhead is a soulful and emotional piece about missing someone who has left for a journey to find inner peace. The lyrics are simple and direct, with an underlying message of hope and love. The singer acknowledges the pain of separation and the uncertainty of the future, but also expresses his belief in his loved one's strength and resilience. The use of repetition in the chorus reinforces the central message of the song - that no matter where the person goes or what challenges they face, they will always have the singer's love and support.

The song begins with the singer acknowledging the passing of another day but also recognizing that it could be a difficult one because he knows that the person he cares for is leaving. He understands that they are departing in search of peace and a sense of self-discovery, but at the same time, it is hard for him to let them go. The mention of the greyhound bus implies a long journey, perhaps a physical one, but also a metaphorical one where the person is trying to escape from their past or the negativity in their life.

The second verse brings back memories of happier times, reinforcing the connection between the two people. The singer shares his belief in the person's abilities and praises their resilience, with the refrain "Shine on now" encouraging them to keep going despite the challenges they may face. The repetition of "Waiting right here" in the choruses further emphasizes the singer's commitment to being there for the person when they return.

Overall, "What I Got" by Franti Michael & Spearhead is a heartfelt tribute to love and commitment in the face of adversity. It is a testament to the strength of human connections and the power of hope.

This whole album was killer. Always nice to see artists showing some love to Sublime.

The bird from the Bobby BoJanglles show

This is what I call a cover. Not copying an artist but giving your own twist to it. Both versions are great.

Andrew Brunelle

Really amazing cover of What I Got. Adding hip-hop to this song really made it awesome. RIP Bradley.

Babylon Has Fallen!

This does so much justice to the original. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I might like this cover a little more. It just has a great vibe to it.

Man, Gab's a long cry from a no-talent -- I feel like it helps a lot to know him in advance, and realize that he's not just pretending to think like this to rock off a tribute; this song is actually pretty similar to his own headspace. Try his songs Evolution and Up. Even if you still hate this cover after that, you'll have heard to sweet raps.

Fred Mench
