The band first experienced chart success when their second single "Take Me Out" reached #3 in the UK Charts, followed by their debut album Franz Ferdinand which entered the UK album chart at #3. The band went on to win the 2004 Mercury Music Prize and two BRIT Awards in 2005 for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act. NME named Franz Ferdinand as their Album of the Year. From the album, three top-ten singles were released, "Take Me Out", "The Dark of the Matinée" and "This Fire". The band has also received several Grammy Award nominations.
The band is named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria whose assassination was one of the main reasons for the start of the First World War. The band decided on the name after seeing a racehorse named Archduke Ferdinand win the Northumberland Plate in 2001, eventually coming to the decision as the alliteration and sound of the name appealed to them.

Stand on the Horizon
Franz Ferdinand Lyrics

How can I tell you I was wrong?
When I am
The proudest man
Ever born
I stand on the horizon
I wanna step across it with you
Everything's cold
On the line of the horizon
Come to me
Oh won't you come to me
Come to me
Oh won't you come to me
Come to me
Oh won't you come to me
Oh won't you come to me
How can I tell you I was wrong?
How can I tell you I was wrong?
When I am
The cruelest man
You have known
That you ever known
That you ever known
That you ever known
I stand on the horizon
I wanna step across it with you
But when the sun is this low
Everything's gold
On the line of the horizon
In South Shields Metro station
I heard Marsden Rock was breaking
The North Sea shaking
All that we know
To make us see the point of living
Is to live
So won't you come to me
Oh won't you come to me yeah
Oh come to me
Oh won't you come to me yeah
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Won't you come to me baby?
Oh won't you come to me?"
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Won't you come to me baby?
Oh won't you come to me?"
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Won't you come to me baby?"
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Oh won't you come to me?"
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Won't you come to me baby?"
The North Sea sings
"Oh won't you come to me?"
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Won't you come to me baby?"
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Oh won't you come to me?"
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Won't you come to me baby?"
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Come to me"
Oh won't you come to me with you
Won't you come to me with you
Won't you come to me with you
Won't you come to me?
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Won't you come to me baby?"
Oh, the North Sea's singing
"Won't you come to me?"
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Won't you come to me baby?"
Oh, the North Sea sings
"Oh won't you come to me?"
The lyrics of Franz Ferdinand's song Stand on the Horizon seem to reflect the theme of regret and the desire for redemption. The singer is asking the object of his affections to forgive him, but he struggles with finding the right words to convey his remorse. The repetition of the line "How can I tell you I was wrong?" emphasizes the difficulty he faces in expressing his regret. However, at the same time, he also takes pride in his stubbornness and unyielding nature, shown by the lines "When I am the proudest man ever born" and "When I am the cruelest man you have known". The juxtaposition of these conflicting emotions adds depth to the character's personality as well as highlights the complexity of human relationships.
The song's title "Stand on the Horizon" is a metaphor for the singer's desire to move beyond his past mistakes and start anew with his loved one. The horizon represents a boundary that separates the present from the future, and by standing on it, the singer is showing his willingness to take risks and embrace the unknown. The North Sea, mentioned in the final part of the song, may symbolize the vastness and unpredictability of life, and how sometimes it takes a leap of faith to find happiness.
