Silent Night
Franz Gruber Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, All is bright
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child
Holy Infant so Tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight!
Glories stream from heaven afar;
Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!
Christ the Saviour is born!
Christ the Saviour is born!

Silent night, holy night!
Wondrous star, lend thy light!
With the angels let us sing
Alleluia to our King!
Christ the Saviour is here,
Jesus the Saviour is here!

Silent night, Holy night!
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus Lord at thy birth;
Jesus Lord at thy birth.

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Franz Gruber's Silent Night is a beautiful and peaceful description of the night in which Jesus was born. The word "holy" is used twice to emphasize the sacredness of the moment, and the repetition of "silent night" adds to the contemplative atmosphere. The second line, "All is calm, All is bright," further reinforces the serenity of the scene. The third and fourth lines introduce the characters of the story, the Virgin Mary and Jesus. Jesus is described as a "Holy Infant so Tender and mild," which highlights his vulnerable and innocent state. Finally, the verse ends with a gentle plea for the Infant to "Sleep in heavenly peace," invoking a sense of tranquility and a longing for a peaceful rest.

The second verse introduces the shepherds who were visited by angels on the night of Jesus' birth. They are depicted as trembling in awe at the sight of the angels, heightening the sense of wonder and power. The next lines, "Glories stream from heaven afar; Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!" highlight the divine nature of this encounter. The verse ends with the announcement that "Christ the Saviour is born!", bringing the focus back to the central figure of the story and emphasizing the significance of his birth.

The third verse is a call to join the angels in singing "Alleluia to our King!" The repetition of "Silent night, holy night" and "Christ the Saviour is here" further emphasize the message of the song - that on this holy night, Jesus came into the world to bring salvation and hope. The final verse emphasizes the love and light that Jesus embodies, using the phrase "love's pure light." The radiance of Jesus' face is described as "With the dawn of redeeming grace," suggesting that with his birth, a new era of redemption and salvation has begun.

John 14:6 KJV, "Jesus saith, I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

1 Peter 2:24 NIV, "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed."

John 3:16 KJV, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life".

Romans 3:23-24 NIV, "...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus".

John 8:12 KJV, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life".

Jesus is the only WAY to God, the TRUTH of salvation, and the Breath/Bread of LIFE.

ACCEPT Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Sins separate us from God because He's Holy. All sins will be forgiven and erased through faith in Christ Jesus. God ♥ you, is alive, merciful, faithful, truthful, and is waiting with His arms wide open FOR YOU! For Jesus did not come to establish a religion, but to become a mediator between God and men.

Through the Grace of God, Jesus was given to us by paying the price at the Cross at Calvary. Repent and confess from your sins to Jesus and ask Him to forgive you. A sinner cannot save a sinner, only a sinless person can. That sinless Being is Jesus Christ Himself.

Through the faith in Christ Jesus, the sick was healed; everywhere He went, He healed the blind, the mute, the deaf, the demon-possessed, raised the dead, as well as performed many miracles; He also walked on water, turned water into wine, calmed the storm with His command, and was raised up from the dead. Miracles are still being seen today! Jesus is our helper, our healer, our refuge/protection, and our strength for when time gets tough.

God is standing and knocking at the door waiting for your answer right now because THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS COMING.
