The composer’s name is Joseph Haydn; Papa became a term of pretty much contemptuous ridicule in the 19th century which devalued his position as a great composer and is better binned.

Mozart did not come after Haydn.
Haydn was born 24 years before Mozart, and died 18 years after Mozart.

Haydn’s late works and Beethoven’s earliest overlapped for almost 10 years.

Haydn 1732-1809
Mozart 1756-1791
Beethoven 1770-1827

This is surely one of the greatest works of music ever composed. Haydn absolutely nailed it out of the park with this one!

One of the greatest of all Haydn scholars - HC Robbins Landon - who wrote the enormous standard five-volume biography of the composer, edited a huge number of the works in clean Urtext scores, and did so much to contribute to the mid-20th century Haydn renaissance named the ‘Nelson’ Mass as ‘…possibly Haydn’s single greatest work.’

In short, you’re right in your opinion, and in good company.

Fantastic composition! Not enough people know about Papa Haydn today, and that's unfortunate for them because he wrote lots of wonderful music like this mass, as well as the Creation, 104 Symphonies, String quartets, concertos and sonatas for piano and on and on. Not only did he write a lot of music, but he continued to get better and better as he got older, and he learned from the younger masters who came up after him, most notably Mozart and even Beethoven.

I performed this last night and honestly being in the middle of the Kyrie is both thrilling and terrifying.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU SO MUCH for adding the vocal score to this! My choir is singing it next week. I don't have a piano and my sight reading is hopeless. I have to hear something and then I can sing along with it. We were told tonight at rehearsal that we're going to have one of our 3-yearly re-auditions in April, which will involve singing some part of this as set by our conductor so I can now continue to learn it even when we return our hired scores at the end of next week's concert. Who knows, I might even pass the audition!

I've sung this Mass in the tenor part with a great choir and wonderful director. It was marvelous and this performance is excellent.
