This movie holds such a special place in my heart. This was the song my mom would sing to me as a baby. And as I got older my favorite color was pink I absolutely loved everything pink so naturally my anthem was think pink. As I've gotten older I've realized how much this movie and its music really shaped me and is a huge reason as to why I am who I am today along with my other favorite movies from when I was very young (almost all being musicals)

that's just about the loveliest tribute to a film and how it can positively affect a life. this movie effects me too--it makes me feel good inside and makes the world a more beautiful funnier place. a 'funny place' I saw it for the first time at a film revival theatre on St. Marks place in NYC--I'll never forget that evening--it was a New York moment and share this divine film with my sister who is as creative as I am , well, memories are made of that aren't they.

I really liked Astaire's singing in this role. Age made his voice mellower and his phrasing of those tricky Gershwin lyrics seemed more expressive and nuanced than in the past.

I'm not a fan of musicals in general, but this one is so charming and sweet, and it's all due to Hepburn and Astaire (and the Gershwin numbers!) Audrey was one of a kind, and Fred, though not handsome and "manly" in a traditional sense, had an appeal like no one else. His dancing was amazing! I think it's very cool that Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the great male ballet stars of the modern era, worships Astaire as a dancer and performer.

Now admittedly I've never seen any of her movies, watching clips from "Funny Face" is my first introduction to Audrey and I melt with her smile. To me, she seems like that very popular girl in high school that can easily be friends with EVERYONE including the wacky drama and band kids.

With the exception of Roman Holiday, those are definitely not the films I would recommend to introduce someone to Audrey. I would say Charade, Roman Holiday, My Fair Lady, How to Steal a Million, Wait Until Dark, and the Nun's Story, but I suppose it is just personal taste. I think that the ones I've included would appeal to a broader audience though. Regardless, Audrey brightens the screen no matter what film she's in.

Every time I watch this number, all I can think of is that the photographic darkrooms I started out working in, the developer and fixer chemicals he uses to develop the photo, the red lights, and the projector that held the negatives have all become obsolete in the last 15-20 years since digital cameras overtook film. The dual-lens reflex cameras Astaire used in 1957 were just about to be put out to pasture in favor of SLR cameras.

It's more than just dancing. I love how Audrey connected herself with every leading man she worked with. The way she looked at Fred really showed how she let herself got real and honest with her role. And I love the glow on her face when she dances. Dancing was really her first love. Actually, the song Funny Face was written thirty years before the film with Audrey Hepburn. It was written by George Gershwin for Fred Astaire and his sister Adele for a Broadway play by the same name. So, in fact, it is now being sung by the original performer to another pretty lady.

Audrey...as well as other young actresses... was featured with older male actors...i.e.
Fred Astaire.. Cary Grant.. Gary Cooper
because in the late 50's these guys were still very big movie stars and despite their age, the public wanted them to continue in romantic roles with young beautiful actresses.
(To be fair to Fred...he was an amazing dancer who defied gravity and age and continued dancing through his 60's in
popular television specials.)

actually many of those Stars like Astaire, Grant and John Wayne felt very uncomfortable playing those roles and when Wayne complained to Howard Hawks about chasing young women they came up with new ideas including making fun of this inHatari and Rio Lobo. And there was another reason. Karin Dor who married Harlad Reinl who was more than 30 years older explained that during the war her father was never home and when she became interested in men she wanted someone who is a husband and a father figure and obviously many young women felt that way. When Audrey Hepburn shot "Ariane" Gary Cooper (then 60 years) played her lover and Maurice Chevalier (70 years) played her father. Hepburn adored Chevalier and later said, she would have liked it much better if Chevalier had played her lover and Cooper her father. And whenever she spoke of Cary Grant she left no doubt how much he meant to her.

It's the swing genre, believe it or not that genre kept going strong till the late 60s early 70s is when it pretty much died, rock & roll, metal music blew everyone's minds, personally I really love swing music so it's nice to know they still used it even as times were changing & music taste was starting to vary.

I love Audrey Hepburn, but I believe she was miscast here and also in My Fair Lady. She's far too young for Fred Astaire (in his 50's here) and unless you include unlikely beauty, she hasn't got anything like a "funny face". Still, it's a nice film.

Audrey agreed to do the movie only if they could get Fred. It took a lot of negotiation as he was in semi retirement, at least from dancing. She always wanted to dance with the man who is arguably the best dancer of all time. She didn't mind the age difference and was thrilled to do it.
