DAY BY DAY
Fred Frank Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along th' unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men."

Till ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day,

A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Day By Day" by Fred Frank tell a story of the conflicting emotions one can feel during the holiday season. In the first stanza, the singer hears the familiar sound of Christmas bells and the carols they play. The words of these carols repeat the message of "peace on earth, good will to men", a hopeful sentiment that is associated with the holiday season.

However, in the second stanza, the singer reflects on their own feelings of despair, acknowledging that there is no peace on earth. They believe that hate is too strong and that it mocks the message of the carols. In this moment, the singer's perspective on the holiday season is bleak, and they cannot envision a world in which peace is possible.

The tone of the song shifts in the final stanza when the bells ring louder and deeper. Here, the singer hears a powerful message that "God is not dead" and that "the wrong shall fail, the right prevail" with peace on earth. As the bells continue to ring and sing, the world transforms from darkness to light, and a beautiful chant of peace on earth and good will to men fills the air.

Overall, through the use of contrasting emotions and imagery, "Day By Day" explores the complexities of the holiday season and encourages listeners to hold onto hope for a better, more peaceful world.
