I Understand
Freddie & The Dreamers Lyrics

When you're holding my hand
But the way that you hurt me
I just don't understand
Well, you say that you need me
Like an ocean need sand
But the way you deceive me
Well, you know that I love you
More than anyone can
But a one-sided love
I just don't understand
Well, you know that I love you
More than anyone can
But a one-sided love
I just don't understand
Well, you call me your baby
When you're holding my hand
Oh, how you can hurt me
I just don't understand
The lyrics of "I Just Don't Understand" by Freddie & The Dreamers express confusion and hurt regarding a one-sided love. The singer is called "baby" by their partner when they are physically present, but the pain and deceit in the relationship make it hard for them to comprehend the meaning behind those words. The partner claims to need the singer like an ocean needs sand, but their actions do not align with those words, leaving the singer feeling blindsided and trying to make sense of it all.
The singer expresses their love for their partner, but it appears that their love is not returned in the same way. The mention of a "one-sided love" adds to the sense of confusion and frustration, as the singer is left wondering why they are putting so much energy into a relationship that is not reciprocal. The repetition of the line "I just don't understand" emphasizes this confusion and lack of closure.
Overall, the lyrics of "I Just Don't Understand" convey the unpredictable and painful nature of love, particularly when one person's feelings are not reciprocated. Despite the title's promise of understanding, the song ends with the singer still struggling to grasp the situation they are in.

A little gem of a song. I was a kid when it was released so the lyrics went over my head, but it was definitely Freddie's finest hour.

This was my parent party piece. My dad passed away last year and I played this to him whilst holding his hand as he slipped away. I hadn't realised it had Auld Lang Syne running through it. Had to give it a listen today on his birthday.
