Hailing from Gary, Indiana, a place whose murder and crime rates have ranked it several times at the top of the "Most Dangerous Cities" list, Freddie Gibbs is the true definition of a street survivor. Raised on Gary's east side, Gibbs lived the hard life firsthand in a run-down industrial community plagued with vice and ignored by the establishment. After playing at Ball State on a football scholarship, Gibbs was kicked out of college. Over the next few years he went through court-ordered boot camp, joined and got discharged from the military, and held down a series of 9 to 5 jobs without success. Feeling like the system had failed him, Gibbs turned to hustling; pimping and selling crack out of a local house. Inspired by rappers like UGK, The Geto Boys, and 2Pac, Gibbs started rhyming about his life and the issues facing urban youth in Gary and the countless other impoverished cities just like it. Gibbs is the first rapper signed to a major label from Gary.
The Steel City's most famous musical residents to date are the Jackson 5, whose name still adorns a marquee on a falling-apart theater in Gary's blighted downtown. His desire to rep the Midwest and his city led Gibbs to start recording mixtapes and pushing them online as well as the streets, where he quickly began garnering fans drawn to his original style, diverse flows, and deeply personal lyrics about his experience as a young black man growing up below the poverty line in a forgotten American city.
Freddie has worked with respected producers like Madlib, Red Spyda, Just Blaze, Buckwild, the Alchemist, Polow Da Don, and Collipark among many others. Gibbs cites Houston rap and Pac as his major influences, and it shows in his ability to alternate between chillingly tense street stories of violence and laid back comedic tales about women and weed. Ultimately Gibbs shows and proves with his rhymes, which demonstrate the promise of a legend in the making. His skills, wit, and street credibility establish Freddie Gibbs as a true artist. He's ready to represent for Gary, the Midwest, and anyone who relates to the struggle of inner city life. As Gibbs tells it: "My music is definitely on some gangsta shit. That's what I was raised on and what I witnessed. How can I speak on anything else?" "Become a fan now, or become one later."

I just dropped a deuce
Dropped the bag on 'em
Woah, kill it!
Smokin' ooh, P1 aqua blue
Just washed up the shoe
I cannot put Kobe's on my new shit
Hit the store, I just dropped a fo'
I just dropped a deuce
Chicken hoe, mix it in the bowl
Stripped it like manure, ooh
All white Maybach, bitch I'm slippin' through
Diddy-bop and I need me a casket and a '62
Smokin' ooh, P1 aqua blue
Just washed up the shoe
I cannot let hoes sleep in my new house
Gave that bitch the boot, ooh
Fuck the fuck the club I'm in the basement with the bag
Baggin' up, told my momma I'll stop serving if I go platinum
I might cop her some red bottoms if the ho bad enough
Red dot on pussy niggas, we just toe taggin' 'em
Fuck the fuck the club I'm in the basement with the bag
Baggin' up, told my momma I'll stop serving if I go platinum
I might cop her some red bottoms if the ho bad enough
Red dot on pussy niggas, we just toe taggin' 'em
Taggin' 'em, taggin' 'em, body-baggin' 'em
Club said we can't bring the strap wit' us
We gon' stab 'em all
Two hoes can't fit in this stand wit' us
We gon' lap 'em up
Duck down then I Deion Sander'd 'em
When I standed up
Ooh, fucked it up, I bend it over from the back standin' up
I was on the run, screams, and the gat
I just took Russian home to Malibu, tearin' 'em up
Please the pussy on the beach, I got a camera
Fuck the fuck the club I'm in the basement with the bag
Baggin' up, told my momma I'll stop serving if I go platinum
I might cop her some red bottoms if the ho bad enough
Red dot on pussy niggas, we just toe taggin' 'em
Fuck the-fuck the club I'm in the basement with the bag
Baggin' up, told my momma I'll stop serving if I go platinum
I might cop her some red bottoms if the ho bad enough
Red dot on pussy niggas, we just toe taggin' 'em
The lyrics to Freddie Gibbs's song "Toe Tag" depict a gritty and intense lifestyle, delving into themes of drug dealing and violence. The opening lines suggest that the singer is engaged in criminal activity, boasting about dropping a "fo'" (40 ounces) and a "deuce" (two ounces) of drugs. They exude confidence and power, dropping the bag on their enemies, asserting their dominance.
The following verses continue to paint a picture of a lavish lifestyle infused with danger. The mention of smoking and the aqua blue P1 (likely referring to the McLaren P1 sports car) adds to the atmosphere of luxury and indulgence. The reference to Kobe suggests the singer's affinity for basketball legend Kobe Bryant, but also indicates their preference for new and exclusive things.
As the song progresses, the lyrics reveal a willingness to resort to violence. The singer claims to be in possession of a firearm and is ready to "toe tag" or kill their enemies. They express a disregard for the club scene, preferring the basement where their illicit activities take place. The lyrics convey a sense of defiance, a disregard for authority and the consequences of their actions.
Overall, "Toe Tag" presents a dark and thrilling glimpse into a dangerous lifestyle, highlighting the bravado and ruthlessness of the singer.
