Picariello grew up in the North Boston suburb of Lynn and learned to play guitar as a boy. In high school, he formed a band and tried to emulate the hard-driving style of Little Richard. Picariello eventually signed with Philadelphia label Swan Records, a recording studio in which Dick Clark had an interest. Clark brought Picariello national exposure through numerous appearances on Clark's TV show, American Bandstand. Cannon holds the record for most appearances by a performer (110) on Bandstand! He and Clark continued to collaborate on Bandstand reunion concerts long after the TV show ended.
By 1959, Picariello was singing using the stage name, Freddy Cannon. He was also called "Boom Boom" because of his thundering musical renditions and the "Cannon" name. From 1959 through the early 60s, Cannon had three Top Ten hit:

Way Down Yonder in New Orleans
On June 24, 1966, Cannon played himself and performed one of his own songs during the final episode of the teen soap opera "Never Too Young." The role of Cannon was played by David Julian Hirsh in George Clooney's 2003 film, "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.'
As of 2006, Cannon was a resident of Tarzana, California, and continued performing in concert.

"Where The Action Is" was originally broadcasters a summer replacement on ABC weekdays at 2 P.M. ET/PT.
It was supposed to go off the air around Labor Day, but was a surprisingly success (the first daytime show to successfully compete against CBS's top rated game show "Password"), so in September, the show was moved to 4 P.M. ET/PT, so it's young audience could continue to see it after school.
My own "Action" story: I was 9-1/2 years old in the summer of 1965 and my family had a backyard swimming pool. My Mom, a stay at hone housewife (as most married mothers were then) wanted to get my kid brother and I into the pool at 2 P.M. I wanted to watch "Action".
One day it rained, so we couldn't go swimming. I finally got to see an entire episode of "Action".
My Mom (R I.P.) liked the costumes of Paul Revere And The Raiders but liked their music a little less.
I had won my Mom over, as for the rest of that summer, I didn't have to go into the pool until 2:30, allowing me to watch "Action" in it's entirety.
One tidbit: "Where The Action Is" was originally intended as a once a week hour-long prime time show, with CBS programming chief Jim Aubrey asking Dick Clark to produce a pilot, shot in early 1965.
But between the time the pilot was shot and the time CBS executives saw it, Aubrey had been fired and replaced by Mike Dann, who turned down the pilot.
Since Clark had a long history with ABC, he offered them "Action", which the network picked up as a daytime show in June of 1965.

WOW. I haven't heard this song in 55 years and had forgotten all about it. However, the familiarity of the song came rushing back to me as soon as this video started. It's amazing how our brains never forget a melody no matter how much time goes by.

I never will forget it. My best friend's home had that show on when I went there to play. Walking home on Farm Road in Sherborn MA that song would play in my head as I promised myself I am going to start watching that fun show. Never did though, since the lure of outdoor play got me to forget about TV. Loved the song then and will forever.
