Doin' What Comes Natur'lly
Freddy Martin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Folks are dumb where I come from
They ain't had any learnin'
Still they're happy as can be

Doin' what comes naturally
Doin' what comes naturally

Folks like us could never fuss
With schools and books and learnin'
Still we've gone from A to Z

Doin' what comes naturally
Doin' what comes naturally

You don't have to know how to read or write
When you're out with a feller in the pale moonlight
You don't have to look in a book to find
What he thinks of the moon or what is on his mind

That comes naturally
That comes naturally

My uncle out in Texas
Can't even write his name
He signs his checks with X's
But they cash 'em just the same

Uncle Ben got angry when
They caught him stealing chickens
I'm within my rights says he
Doin what comes naturally
Doin what comes naturally

Cousin Jack insured his shack
And now he plays with matches.
He'll collect just wait and see
Doin what comes naturally.
Doin what comes naturally

Sister Sal whose music-ale
Ain't never had a lesson
Still she's learned to sing off key
Doin what comes naturally.
Doin what comes naturally.

You don't have to go to a private school
Not to turn up your bustle to a stubborn mule
You don't have to have a professor's dome
Not to go for the honey when the bee's at home
That comes naturally
That comes naturally

My uncle don't pay taxes
His address never gives
They can't collect his taxes
For they don't know where he lives.

Grandpa Dick was always sick,
But never saw a doctor.
He just died at 93,

Overall Meaning

The song "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly" by Freddy Martin showcase the idea of simplicity and ignorance as the source of happiness. The lyricist reflects upon a community where people do not have the luxury of formal education, however, they are still happy with life. They don't require books and schools to acquire knowledge and experience, but instead, they follow their natural instincts. People don't need to know how to read or write to enjoy an evening in the pale moonlight, they don't need to look in a book to know what's on their lover's mind, all they need is their natural instincts. For instance, Uncle Ben knows he is within his rights when he steals chicken. Family members like Uncle Ben, Cousin Jack, and Grandpa Dick are portrayed as happy and contented despite their shortcomings or ill behavior because they follow their natural instincts.

THE best instance of where Freddy's decidedly corny band "worked" exceptionally well!

I'd heard this song maybe TWICE in my childhood (in the 70s), and I always thought it was Tennessee Ernie Ford. For years I'd tried to find Tennessee Ernie Ford's 45 or LP of this song. All because the dopey hick voice sounded like "Cousin Ernie" on I Love Lucy.

Hooray for YouTube is all I can say. The next dozen or so plays of this video will be from me, ha ha.
