In 1952 he joins an international competition for the first time in Belfast, Ireland, where he wins the first prize.
However it takes till 1954 before he records his first songs, mainly songs about life at sea and some country music.
He soon extends his career by learning to act, and he will join several movies in Germany.
1956 sees Freddy representing Germany at the first Eurovision Song Contest together with Walter Andreas Schwarz. It is the only year that countries enter the contest with two songs. No points are given, and only the winner, Lys Assia is anounced.
Freddy's songs however become instant hits in Germany, Austria, Luxemburg, the Netherlands and Belgium and several other countries.
"La Paloma","Junge, komm bald wieder" and "Die Gitarre und das Meer" bring him fame, golden records and many awards.
Freddy keeps singing all his life, and in 2002 he makes his last tour, which ends in the city where he is born : Vienna.

Kein Kuss, kein Scherz
Viele Jahre, schwere Fron
Harte Arbeit, karger Lohn
Tagaus, tagein
Kein Glück, kein Heim
Alles liegt so weit, so weit
The song "Heimweh" by Freddy Quinn is a pensive, melancholic summons of the nostalgia and longing for home. In the opening lines, the singer reminisces about the good times and the beauty of "the time." However, he is quick to remind himself of other circumstances—one of harsh reality—being in a desert with no sign of home, love, or warmth. The singer expresses the deep desire to be with his loved ones, yet he cannot stop contemplating the distance between him and his hometown, leaving him feeling lonely and detached. The line "Dort, wo die Blumen blühen" or "there, where the flowers are blooming" and "Dort, wo die Täler grün" or "there, where the valleys are green" indicates that the singer is talking about the countryside, where everything is green, where flowers and trees flourish, and where his heart belongs. The song ends with the singer searching for solace in the stars, asking them to convey his greetings to his loved ones back home while he remains alone.
