Weisst Du wieviel Sternlein stehen?

An dem blauen Himmelszelt
Weißt du, wieviel Wolken gehen
Weit hin über alle Welt
Gott der Herr hat sie gezählet
Dass ihm auch nicht eines fehlet
An der ganzen großen Zahl
In der hellen Sonnenglut
Wieviel Fischlein auch sich kühlen
In der hellen Wasserflut
Gott der Herr rief sie mit Namen
Dass sie all ins Leben kamen
Dass sie nun so fröhlich sind
Weißt du, wie viel Kindlein frühe
Stehn aus ihrem Bettlein auf
Dass sie ohne Sorg und Mühe
Fröhlich sind im Tageslauf
Gott im Himmel hat an allen
Seine Lust sein Wohlgefallen
Kennt auch dich und hat dich lieb
The song "Weißt du, wie viel Sternlein stehen" by Freddy Quinn is a hymn that celebrates the majesty of God's creation. It begins with the question of how many stars are twinkling in the blue sky above us, and how many clouds are floating across the world. The lyrics suggest that God has counted every single one of them, and that not one is lost in this vast universe. The song goes on to describe the playful buzzing of tiny mosquitoes in the bright sunlight, the graceful swimming of little fish in the deep blue water. All of these creatures were called by God's name and given life. In this sense, the song is an embodiment of Psalm 147:4, in which it states that "He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them."
