Free State Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the darkness that surrounds us
Like a fire, so deep in the soul.
I'm here to set you free,
I will release your heart,
And let your love infect me,
Your touch can protect me.
I'm here to release you,
I'm here to release you,
Let me show you how love feels.
I'm here to release you,
Let me show you how love feels.
In Free State's song Release, the lyrics depict a metaphorical struggle between light and darkness - a theme that is common in most of their tracks. The lyrics are particularly poetic, and they make use of metaphors to describe what love means to the singer. The opening line, "You shine a light into my life," exemplifies this poeticism, as it describes how their lover brings brightness to their life. They go on to say that this light has a transformative effect on the "darkness that surrounds us."
The singer states that they are there to set their partner free, saying "I'm here to set you free." This could mean that their partner is trapped in some way, whether it be emotionally or mentally, and the singer is there to help them overcome whatever it is that is holding them back. They also say that they want to "release your heart," which could mean the same thing, but it could also mean that their partner's heart is guarded and that the singer wants to help them open up emotionally.
The rest of the song conveys a sense of intimacy and dependency that exists between the two characters. The singer says that their lover's touch can protect them, which suggests that they feel safe and secure when they're together. They also say, "Let me show you how love feels" three times, which could mean that their partner has never experienced love before or that their previous experiences have been unsatisfying. The repetition of this phrase indicates that the singer wants to give their partner the full experience of what love can be.

wish A&B made more stuff like this, they're starting to get really cheesy

@Ash Redding "EDM industry" is a good term. They used to be used to be actual musicians, artists, putting all their soul and being into their sound. And now they are just a part of "EDM industry". Well put.

@Ash Redding Sorry but you kidding yourself if you think they haven't gone down the route of cheese. They simply saw a shift in the market (towards America) where a different kind of cheapened sound was now the most lucrative demand, and they switched. It is as simple as that.
It was no evolution or natural progression, it was sacrificing Anjuna's roots and the musical integrity it had for something far more cliched that would sell well as a product. The most frustrating thing is that you can still hear moments of pure quality in their releases, but its over-shadowed by use of in-trend sounds tailored for festival crowds in miami, vegas etc, where everyones forming love-heart hand shapes...it's easy to please the masses, just look at the pop scene!

I agree with a want for more tracks like this, but have to disagree that they are getting cheesy. They have developed their sound, style & most importantly increased & listened to us the fan base which with the help of Group Therapy has allowed them through their ability to be diverse as well as the help of social media & the fans being able to express opinions & needs much more easily, to become as successful & just as important to the EDM industry today as we know it.
