Twisted
Fretblanket Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Me and the animal lover
Never fall for each other
But she'll wait for me to turn my back
Twist the knife and hit the sack
Twist the knife and hit the sack
Me and the animals friend
Spent years and tears on the mares
But she's friends of all for what it's worth
The lust just gets more down to earth
After all, after all, she said
Take off my clothes and drag me to the sea
She just wants someone who's free
How could that be me?
Take off my clothes and drag me to the sea

She just wants someone who's free
How could that be me?
Me at the age of four
Kissed the sky then broke the fuckin' floor
Well okay, I'll go along, but I don't have to like it
I'll go along but I don't have to like you
After all, after all, she said
Take off my clothes and drag me to the sea
She just wants someone whose free
How could that be me
Take off my clothes and drag me to the sea
She just wants someone who's free

And how could that be me
How could that be me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Fretblanket's song "Twisted" depict a complex set of desires and relationships. The first two verses describe two different women with whom the singer has had some sort of relationship. The first woman, who is referred to as the animal lover, seems to have some level of sexual attraction to the singer, but also harbors some resentments towards him. She waits for him to "turn his back" and then "twists the knife," which could suggest a betrayal or some sort of emotional manipulation. The second woman is the animal's friend, and the singer has spent "years and tears" with horses alongside her. While they are friends, there is also an element of lust that is "more down to earth."

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "take off my clothes and drag me to the sea" and asserts that the second woman just wants someone who is free, but questions how the singer could be that person. The bridge of the song takes a different turn and introduces the singer as a child, kissing the sky and breaking the floor at the age of four. The bridge includes a confrontational line, "I'll go along but I don't have to like you," which could be directed at either of the two women from earlier in the song.

Overall, the song seems to be exploring different layers of intimacy and desire, and the difficulty of finding true freedom within those desires. The animal lover and friend both represent different aspects of attraction that can be both alluring and complicated. The repeated line about stripping down and heading into the ocean could represent a longing for escape, but also highlights the challenges of truly connecting with another person in a meaningful way.

I still love this band to this day. They never got the recognition they deserved.

Honour The Fire

Nice to find this. Great memories of the old Grapevine in Brum. My band played with them back in 91, they blew us away. This song is timeless šŸ’š

Remember my big bro buying this cassette from a hidden little arcade music shop after hearing them on 411VM. I was 11 and absolutely loved it. Lost that tape and got the CD from Voyager music on import in 2000, loaned it to a mate and never got it back. Then my bro found it in a Vinnies CD rack in 2010. That copy too, has since vanished. Thank you uploader and YouTube for allowing me to somewhat relive some great memories through these songs.
