It's Quiet Uptown
Freya Catherine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There are moments that the words don't reach
There is suffering too terrible to name
You hold your child as tight as you can
cnd push away the unimaginable
The moments when you're in so deep
It feels easier to just swim down
The Hamiltons move uptown
cnd learn to live with the unimaginable

I spend hours in the garden
I walk alone to the store
cnd it's quiet uptown
I never liked the quiet before
I take the children to church on Sunday
c sign of the cross at the door
cnd I pray
That never used to happen before

If you see him in the street, walking by
Himself, talking to himself, have pity
Philip, you would like it uptown
It's quiet uptown
He is working through the unimaginable

His hair has gone grey. He passes every day
They say he walks the length of the city
You knock me out, I fall apart
Can you imagine?
Look at where we are
Look at where we started
I know I don't deserve you, Eliza
But hear me out. That would be enough

If I could spare his life
If I could trade his life for mine
He'd be standing here right now
cnd you would smile, and that would be enough
I don't pretend to know
The challenges we're facing
I know there's no replacing what we've lost
cnd you need time
But I'm not afraid
I know who I married
Just let me stay here by your side
That would be enough

If you see him in the street, walking by her
Side, talking by her side, have pity
Eliza, do you like it uptown? It's quiet uptown
He is trying to do the unimaginable

See them walking in the park, long after dark
Taking in the sights of the city
Look around, look around, Eliza
They are trying to do the unimaginable
There are moments that the words don't reach
There is a grace too powerful to name
We push away what we can never understand
We push away the unimaginable
They are standing in the garden
clexander by Eliza's side
She takes his hand

It's quiet uptown

Forgiveness. Can you imagine?
Forgiveness. Can you imagine?
If you see him in the street, walking by her

Side, talking by her side, have pity
They are going through the unimaginable

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Freya Catherine's song "It's Quiet Uptown" explore the raw emotions of grief, loss, and forgiveness in the face of unimaginable tragedy. The song is reminiscent of the musical "Hamilton," as it represents a moment of deep sorrow for the characters Alexander and Eliza Hamilton following the death of their son, Philip.

The first verse depicts the overwhelming pain and suffering that words cannot adequately express. It portrays a parent's instinctive need to protect their child from unimaginable hardships. The lines "You hold your child as tight as you can and push away the unimaginable" demonstrate the desperate attempt to shield oneself from the harsh realities of life. However, the chorus reveals that even in the quietness of uptown, where life might seem peaceful, the pain and loss cannot be escaped. The characters are forced to learn to live with the unimaginable grief and find solace in quiet moments.

The second verse provides a glimpse into the personal struggles and coping mechanisms of Eliza Hamilton. She seeks solace in spending time in the garden or walking alone to the store. The quietness of the uptown area, once disliked, now becomes a refuge in her grieving process. Eliza attends church and finds solace in prayer, a new practice triggered by the loss she has experienced. The mention of Philip Hamilton walking and talking to himself in the street reflects the effects of grief on Alexander Hamilton, his father.

As the song progresses, the emotions intensify, and Alexander Hamilton acknowledges his guilt and regrets. He acknowledges that their lives have drastically changed since the beginning, and he feels unworthy of Eliza's love. He ponders what could have been different if he had been able to spare their son's life. The lyrics convey his desire for forgiveness and his willingness to do anything to bring solace to Eliza, even if it means sacrificing himself.

The final verses show the couple attempting to move forward, grasping onto the concrete gestures and actions that mark progress. The mention of walking in the park at night symbolizes their determination to find some peace and joy amidst their pain. The repetition of the phrase "They are trying to do the unimaginable" emphasizes their ongoing struggle to navigate through the immense grief they face.

Overall, "It's Quiet Uptown" delves into the complex emotions of loss, guilt, forgiveness, and the resilience to move forward in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

i hate that Kelly Clarkson's is more viewed(not that she is a worse singer, quite the opposite in that she is the almost closest to you) then this, you can really feel the anguish in this version then in others versions. please keep it up there is never a lack of emotion or conviction in your singing. no matter the the song i believe every thing you sing!

@haroldsingletary8005

Vagrant Journeys ...Kelly Clarkson’s performance is the BEST version I have heard.
