Formed out of the ashes of First Day Back, the St Albans, United Kingdom hardcore band they formed while still at school, Friendly Fires make razor-sharp post-punk that burns through the memories of all the dismal, skinny jeaned ‘80s revivalists you’ve been hearing these past few years. Sounding brittle, knotty and urgent, Friendly Fires are the real deal. With no fat or padding on them at all, their songs possess an elegant sparseness. As guitarist Edd Gibson notes: “The hardest thing I think is to know what to leave out, to know when something is enough.” But amongst all the stripped-back twists, there are also moments full of deep, blissed-out melodies. “I love lush, massive, tingly chords; the My Bloody Valentine sound,” says bassist and singer Ed MacFarlane.
Love Song
Friendly Fires Lyrics

May well be simple but they're true
Until you give your love
There's nothing more that we can do
Love is the opening door
Love is what we came here for
No one could offer you more
Have your eyes really seen?
You say it's very hard
To leave behind the life we knew
But there's no other way
And now it's really up to you
Love is the key we must turn
Truth is the flame we must burn
Freedom the lesson we must learn
Do you know what i mean?
Have your eyes really seen?
Love is the key we must turn
Truth is the flame we must burn
Freedom the lesson we must learn
Do you know what i mean?
Have your eyes really seen?
Do you know what i mean?
Have your eyes really seen?
In "Love Song," Friendly Fires addresses the universal theme of love and its transformative power. The opening lines emphasize the simplicity and sincerity of the message being conveyed. The lyrics suggest that love is a fundamental aspect of human existence, and without expressing and receiving love, our lives lack fulfillment.
The chorus highlights the importance of love as the key that unlocks doors and brings meaning to our lives. It suggests that love is the purpose for which we are here, and nothing else can offer the same depth of fulfillment. The lyrics prompt the listener to contemplate whether they truly understand the profound impact that love can have on their lives.
The second verse acknowledges the challenges that arise when trying to leave behind the familiar and comfortable aspects of our lives. It implies that embracing love requires courage and a willingness to let go of the past. The decision to open oneself up to love ultimately rests with the individual, and the lyrics encourage them to take the leap.
The repetition of the chorus in the final verse reinforces the importance of love as the key to unlocking truth and freedom. It suggests that only through love can we truly understand ourselves and others, and that by embracing love, we can experience a more liberated and authentic existence. The lyrics invite us to reflect on whether we have truly grasped the transformative power of love and if we have truly allowed ourselves to truly see and embrace it.
Overall, "Love Song" delivers a message that love is essential for personal growth and fulfillment. It comes with challenges and requires bravery, but ultimately holds the key to unlocking truth, freedom, and deeper connections with ourselves and others. The lyrics urge us to reflect on our understanding and experience of love, encouraging us to open our hearts and truly see the transformative power it holds.

This is such a good song. So many bands from the early 2010s went on hiatus and came back sounding like half of themselves. But Friendly Fires sound better than ever. Bring on the new album!
