When The Music Is Gone
Friends Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's a friday night
We're on the road again
Another town another scene
Another audience
But you're not here with me
I keep on calling you
When I'm standing in the spotlight
What am I to do
I'm losing my mind without you
CHORUS
I tried to give a good face
And keep the action in place
On the stage I belong
But where do I go with my heart
When the music is gone
It was the night when you called
And said you're leaving it all
But the show must go on
Now where do I go with my heart
When the music is gone
Although you're far away
I wishe'd you understand
It's on the stage I can express
This is the way I am
Though you're not here with me
This song is meant for you
When I'm standing in the spotlight
What am I to do
I'm losing my mind without you
CHORUS
After the show at my hotel
I close the door and think of you
Lost in my loneliness ohhh
CHORUS
The lyrics of Friends' song "When The Music Is Gone" reflect the struggle of a musician who is away from their loved one while on tour. They describe the challenge of performing without the support of someone special, and the overwhelming feeling of loneliness that comes when the music stops. The song's opening lines set the scene: it's Friday night and the band is on the road once again, in a new town with a new audience. Despite the energy and excitement of the performance, the singer can't help but feel the absence of their partner. They keep calling and reaching out, but it's not the same as having them there in person.
The chorus of the song offers a sense of resignation and acceptance - the singer tries to put on a "good face" and maintain their professionalism while on stage, but they can't help but wonder where their heart should go when the music ends. They are torn between their love for music and their love for their partner, and the two worlds seem irreconcilable. Even though they are far away, the singer hopes that their partner can somehow understand the importance of music in their life, and the way it allows them to express themselves. But ultimately, the loneliness takes over – after the show, the singer is stuck in a hotel room, alone with their thoughts and their longing for their partner.
Overall, "When The Music Is Gone" is a poignant and relatable reflection on the emotional toll that touring and performing can take on a musician's personal life. The song captures the bittersweet feeling of being on stage, surrounded by applause, but still feeling like something crucial is missing.
