Eulogy for an Angel
From Autumn To Ashes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In a world of despair, our lives will end
Some without warning, while others die by design
Under watchful eyes, we tread on evil ground,
with jaded eyes around us each step is scrutinized
(in the pouring rain, we speed this car, i try so hard,
wish i was more prepared for this time, you shouldn't have passed before me)
In this life we lead, a choice will be made
Where we go from here, when our time is done
At the gates of heavan, angels stare at us
May they lead you home to where you'll live in peace?
You take without warning
(i'll shut myself up and black out the windows)
As we sit and wait
(its best to consider me dead as well)
Breath in take a life
(i'm hoping in time i'll get over)
Breath out, cleanse your soul
(i might be fine when i get older..no way)
You took her life
I gave you mine, to ease the pain of my soul, to show you how much she's meant to me
I will fight for our lives and take them to our graves
In a world of despair, our lives will end
Some with out warning, while others die by design
Under watchful eyes we tread on evil ground,
with jaded eyes around us, each step is scrutinized
I will defy you
The evil from above
Open my mind
Let you in

I will not forgive the sins you made
You took her life from me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Eulogy for an Angel" by From Autumn To Ashes present the theme of mortality and the inevitability of death. The opening lines, "In a world of despair, our lives will end/ Some without warning, while others die by design" set the tone, as the singer attempts to come to grips with the fragility of life. The subsequent lines describe a sense of vulnerability as the singer acknowledges that life is constantly under scrutiny, perhaps alluding to the idea that one may never truly know when they will die. The use of rain, frequently symbolizing sadness and despair, as well as the mention of an unpreparedness for the singer's current situation may indicate the suddenness of a loved one's passing, compounding the grief felt by the singer.

The chorus provides a sense of hope and resignation as the singer contemplates the afterlife: "Where we go from here, when our time is done/ At the gates of heavan, angels stare at us/ May they lead you home to where you'll live in peace?" The song deals with heavy themes, and the singer's mixed feelings towards death are present. The idea of death being both a peaceful release and a violent taking away that is fiercely resisted is evident in lines like "I will not forgive the sins you made/ You took her life from me."

In conclusion, "Eulogy for an Angel" encapsulates the pain and confusion that comes with the loss of a loved one, as well as the inevitability of death that is part of life. The singer's feelings of anger, defeat, sadness, and hope are all present in the lyrics, making for a deeply emotional song.

Hell no, they played it EVERY TIME I saw them live on Long Island (where they are from).

The place would go fucking ballistic, at THE DOWNTOWN BABY, LI REPRESENT THE DOWNTOWN!

They closed with this or short stories, either way it was towards the end because it destroyed the world, every person on stage with them singing.

Fuck I miss gigs in the 2000-2005-ish range.

FUCKING UNDEROATH BEFORE CHANGING TIMES WAS RELEASED!!! Shit was amazing, they played in some big garage on a stage that was 5 inches off the ground.......

Sorry, I'm remembering high school and getting ranty/nostalgic.

The best live song perhaps in the history of rocking the fuck out. You get the rock out part, the fist-pump part, the breather to yell the drummer's awesome lyrics, then back to rocking the fuck out and fist-pumping. I always enjoyed this song the most.

@Blazinnn89

My favorite post hardcore album of all time.

You sir, restored faith in the internet for me. wish there would be more people thinking like you.

This album will always be associated with being 14-15. It's not the most emotionally mature or the most technically proficient - but's it's earnest, sincere, and angsty in all the right ways. I remember writing down the lyrics from the Internet (darklyrics.com, I do believe) and memorizing most of the songs on Too Bad You're Beautiful.

So 14 years later, I'm sitting at my desk and 'I will defy you! The evil from above!' pops into my head. FATA (well, the first two records) hold up pretty well over a decade later.

@fatshadow10
