Debut Album
Line-up:
Mario Hernandez: vocals and instrumentals
The debut record, Me and Amy and the Two French Boys, was gloriously accepted as the shimmering and melodic pop illumination that it was. Combining loves for American pop with Japanese kitsch, Bowie and the Beatles with Pink Lady, From Bubblegum to Sky released an album full of "serene sonic textures" and a "sparkling, distinctive pop aesthetic."
Second Album
Line-up:
Mario Hernandez: vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards, drums, maracas
Jamie McCormick: backing vocals, bass, electric guitar, guitar, organ, piano, twelve-string guitar
Ben Brunn: backing vocals, bass
Nothing Sadder Than Lonely Queen builds upon the groundwork laid down by the debut album. Whether it's the soulfully refreshing nature of The Gurls & Shoo Be Doo Wop or the New Wave textures.
Third Album
Line-up:
Frank Jordan: bass and vocals
Bill Evans: keyboards and vocals
Mario Hernandez: vocals and guitar
Steve LeFollotte: keyboards and bass
On the third album the project takes more of a DIY free-form. Mario says, “ This record is much more inspired — less obvious indie pop, more organic and drunk. Almost cathartic where the songs flow out naturally. I just write songs whatever that means. It’s an outlet and easily my favorite record. I needed to prove to myself that I can do everything without having to plan to do everything. This was the least stressful, easiest recording process. I was pulling from the interpretations of the players on some things while adding structure where I thought structure needed to be. The songs edited themselves.”
The phrase A Soft Kill brings to mind the concept of the vices people use to kill themselves slowly. Not a murder, but a soft kill.
Not long before finishing the third album, Mario moved to NYC, and this was later proved to recharge his interest in music. Also this helped to perform live easier.
Say Goodbye
From Bubblegum To Sky Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lean as he kisses on the surface
All I see you to say don′t turn around
You know I love it when you say you don't need me
You know I dig it when you say you won′t see me
All of this so I can hear you say goodbye
Say goodbye
Holes in your eyes, holes in your signs, holes in your lines
Holes in your eyes, holes in your signs, holes in your lines
In "Say Goodbye" by From Bubblegum To Sky, the lyrics describe a bittersweet breakup. The singer is watching their significant other lean into someone else for a kiss, and can sense that things are ending. However, they are still drawn to the other person, hoping to hear them say goodbye so that they can at least have closure. The lines "You know I love it when you say you don't need me...All of this so I can hear you say goodbye" highlight the complicated mix of emotions the singer is feeling. They want to move on, but they are also reluctant to let go.
The repeated refrain of "holes in your eyes, holes in your signs, holes in your lines" adds to the overall feeling of disconnect and incompleteness. The singer can see the signs that the relationship is ending, but they are still struggling to make sense of it all. The repetition of these lines also creates a kind of rhythmic emptiness, mirroring the sense of loss and confusion in the lyrics.
Overall, "Say Goodbye" is a melancholy yet catchy tune that captures the complicated nature of breakup and the lingering desire for closure.
