Quite Unusual
Front 242 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sun went down and the ground started sort of grinding
A blinding light tore across the sky
A cyclone swept the landscape out
And left it completely flattened out
And several twirls of smoke unfolded like gigantic flowers

The way the morning broke was quite unusual
I should have wakened up at once,
But this was no concern of mine,
So I kept on dreaming

My eyes roamed over the burning ruins

In less time than it takes to tell

And I felt like
And I felt like being numbed,
I felt like mesmerized

The way the morning broke was quite unusual
More than words can say

In less time than it takes to tell

Overall Meaning

, the lyrics of Quite Unusual by Front 242 paint a picture of a catastrophic event. The sun sets and the ground begins to shake, signaling the start of an apocalypse. The sky bursts into a blinding light and a cyclone devastates the landscape, leaving nothing but flattened ruins in its wake. Smoke rises from the debris like blooming flowers. Despite the chaos, the singer continues to dream and remains unmoved by the destruction around him. As he gazes upon the burnt landscape, he feels numb and mesmerized. The lyrics end with the line "The way the morning broke was quite unusual, more than words can say", suggesting that the devastation left a lasting impact that cannot be fully expressed through language.

One of the interesting facts about this song is that it was released in 1984 as a single off Front 242's album No Comment. It was one of the band's biggest hits and is considered a classic in the industrial music genre. The song's lyrics are known for their haunting and dystopian imagery, which helped to establish the band's reputation for dark and brooding music.

Another interesting fact is that the song's original title was "Quite Remarkable" but it was changed to "Quite Unusual" to avoid confusion with a song by the same name by the band Pylon. The song was produced by Daniel Bressanutti and Jean-Luc de Meyer, who are also members of Front 242.

The song has been covered by several artists over the years, including Gary Numan, who released a version of the song in 1999. The song has also been used in several films and TV shows, including the 1995 film Hackers and the 2008 TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Interestingly, the song was written and recorded during a time when the threat of nuclear war and other global catastrophes were at the forefront of people's minds. The song's lyrics tap into these fears, imagining a world destroyed by a natural disaster or man-made catastrophe.

In terms of musical style, the song is characterized by its heavy use of synthesizers, drum machines, and electronic percussion. The song's driving beat and ominous vocals contribute to its dark and foreboding tone.

After all these years, Front 242 remains to be in my top 5 favorite groups, I love their technology, electronic sounds and their unique body of dark, mysterious compilations. Crazy though, I live in the US and most people here have not even heard of them, go figure, I can't imagine, but of course I don't know a god damn thing about the crappy pop music culture everyone here is into. Front 242 were the pioneers and way before their time. Front 242 you are my favorite Aliens!

@resofactor

Shame there aren't more groups like this

@p1sstoph3

@Reso Factor there's thousands

@stefannilsson4596

@chris almy First off, "there're thousands" is correct grammar. Secondly, you are wrong.

@p1sstoph3

@Stefan Nilsson 😂just because you have a opinion doesn’t make my statement wrong. There were tons of EBM bands around before and after 242.

@stefannilsson4596

@chris almy Riiight, it is spelled "an opinion" btw, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWdd6_ZxX8c&ab_channel=klatica

My uncle used to give me mixtapes, the greatest of cool uncles and a music genius out of Julliard. This track was on there including stuff from Skinny Puppy, Haujobb, Neitzer Ebb, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, The Orb, Ministry, The Residents, etc etc not to mention all kinds of other culture. So nostalgic seeing this video again. lol
